Everquest. Up until the Planes of Power expansion, it is the best game ever made, imo. Nothing else has ever pulled me in like that one did. I moved on to WoW for a while, but it never captured the feel of that first time in EQ. I played EQ since beta, and my Ranger is like the 4th oldest character on one of the original servers.

I would disagree on pre-PoP era being best. IMO best would be omens of war because the only zone locked behind a flag is anguish. and that's pretty much when raiding matured into both an art and a science at the same time. tho the best raid experience i had was *****mtar (vishimtar) because one of the SERIOUS raid instruction was "you aren't allowed to die" biggrin.gif

I dunno, I mean, it's kinda subjective. Some of my favourite memories of gaming are more made by the people I played with rather than the game. In terms of categories -

RPG
Any Besthesda game. Whilst I never got into Skyrim, F3, NV & Oblivion are some of my favourites.

FPS
Counterstrike. 282 hours played of Global Offensive so far, and numerous hours versus bots on 1.5+ as a kid.
Battlefield 2. So, so, so many hours spent on that, along with the Forgotten Hope 2 mod & Project Reality mod.
OFP/ArmA series. Loved the series since it began, and my love was rekindled with DayZ early last year (I was there when there was 2 servers and spawns took 15 mins+ to play due to 'waiting for server')

RTS
Company of Heroes / Dawn of War I. Relic simply make excellent RTS'

MMORPG
I never had the chance (Mainly monetarily) to try a decent MMORPG, So I can't comment. World of Warcraft always looked sweet to me though.. I know there's a trial, but it's a big download and the level cap thing would ruin the experience for me.

Dunno what category it would fit in, But GTA:San Andreas would also slot into one of my favourite childhood games too. I'm currently stuck at a stage where I don't have any games to play.. I feel like I've exhausted multiple avenues and that the old games simply won't be as good as when I tried them.

In my opinion, Diablo II. It was the first game that I really intensely played, and the first that had a good story behind it (I was 7 years old at the time, and most games I played prior to this were MS-DOS shooters such as Blake Stone, Doom, and Duke Nukem). I still think that Blake Stone was a good game, even though I've been told by others it wasn't very good. I've replayed Diablo II single player mode more times than I can count, so for me it has excellent replay value. I still face a challenge when playing the hardcore mode.

Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic

It's simply superior to anything I've ever played:
The story is really, really good
The characters are extremely well done
The balance is excellent (provided you don't bust out a calculator)
The gameplay is fun
It never feels "grindy"

That last one is the biggest. I've beaten the game at least 7 times, and it's always fun. Yea, it's the same enemies, and because it's an old-ish RPG, they don't spawn in unique places/roam. However, the combat is still interesting. Normal mobs don't have 10 trillion HP - they hit fairly hard, but so do you. Bosses are interesting. You can try to simply beat them with pure DPS or do some stun/heal/dps combo. It all works. Everything simply works. And there's enough side quests that you forget half of them by the end, so they're still good the 2nd time through.
