GTX 1070 in SLI

Hi,

Need some feedback / advice please - I've read SLI is no more or not supported.

GTX 1070 supports SLI - I've also read on bigger resolution 2 x cards 1070 would do well, so on 3840 x 1080, which is a big screen but not a high resolution eg-it's not 1440 - Would 2 x GTX 1070 still be beneficial in a big ish way?

I know the RTX 2070 is out but that is another issue ! - Is 2 x GPU really worth it or not?

Hi,

Actually read somewhere that 2 x SLI is too much hassle - some people mentioned they've done it and it's great when the games are supported but most times the people who tried it were only using 1 x card for most games -

Waste of money to go for 1070 SLI, as well as doing SLI when you don't have CPU with 40 lines. SLI is supported (though there's not tons of games with SLI support nowadays) but most of the times you need to mess around settings anyway to make it work properly. SLI is only worth if you have a mentioned CPU and you pair top tier Nvidias GPUs (80, 80Ti, Titan, Radeons CrossFire is crap) + you're ready to spend "a while" in Nvidia Inspector.

SLI is worth it if the games support it. A lot of games support SLI however some don't. I currently run a 3way 980ti setup in my main rig and SLI 780ti in my sons. I am moving his over to SLI 980ti soon as I have found a few more cards at a good price. I would tell you to go for it and yes it will help with higher res setups for sure.

Umm I'm not trying to be mean but the only thing that is correct you said is that some games don't support SLI. whoever told you that 40 pcie lanes is a must for SLI is completely wrong.

I've put several videos showing 40 pci-e lanes is a must, I can do it again if you wish. Truth is, if you go with non-HEDT you're both losing at start at least 20% of gpus performance and you're opening yourself for stuttering as well.

I don't see how a difference only of 16x/16x vs 8x/8x on SLI GPUs would be a 20% gap.

To respond to the OP, going for the best single card solution you can afford is the typical advice.

Yes thanks for the input - not everyone is correct every time - me included !!!

After I posted the original question I looked other Google search as well - and overall people who have SLI'd mentioned it wasn't really worth it overall because lots of time they were just using one of the two cards because not every game supports it.

I've decided against it - but learning if this is worth it or not is worth the asking - thanks for the input !! - till next time !

OK back to SLI & Crossfire - It seems that plenty use this judging by the online clips of people playing....Also higher resolutions are recommended to use this properly.

One monitor, not high resolution, 3840 x 1080, the Samsung 49" which is twice (1920x1080)_must surely benefit from SLI/CROSS FIRE?

Some other user commented DX12 isn't well supported but is improving (any further comments please)_&_DX11 & older is well supported or better supported than DX11

The Tom Clancy Ghost Recon is super demanding even for 1080 so SLI/CROSS would help and other less demanding titles may not need SLI/CROSS even on 3840 x 1080

There is also talk of SLI/CROSS being more CPU intensive "more cycles" so would i7 7700K / 6700K / 4790K - Would SLI/CROSS work well on these CPU's? (assuming it's supported)_or would it be better to use 5820K clocked @ say 4.2 Ghz

or is a more extreme scenario applicable? - where 5960X/7820X where more cores/threads are needed to get good results.

Is there any argument to suggest that SLI/CROSS will improve again over the next year or so for DX12? - And the situation may repeat itself when the next incarnation of DX arrives such as DX13 and it also isn't supported well but DX12 is.....?

It just depends on which way this goes - and ...or....games which are demanding which the developers realise and know about so they support it well on SLI/CROSS to get better perfomance for more people

Any comments heplful....thanks

I think these should answer your questions, though how will dual GPU behave on 9700k/9900k is yet to consider testing.

SLI is great when it works and if the game has good support but those games are getting fewer and fewer so the support is getting worse and worse
You would be better off with a better single GPU instead of SLI which is is all over the map
