Fallout 4 what's it really like ?

I fooled around in the game ages ago, barely did any missions, or much of anything really, but it was 259 hours. I did a few early Diamond City missions, nothing past that. I had tech problems bugging me, maybe just the game.

Now my new PC is 100x better, and I just added some mods, but for 2 days I haven't even started the game yet. So far the save my son story has bored me.

What do u folks think of the game ? I played tons of Skyrim and FO:NV, I wish it was more like NV

I became completely bored w/Fallout 4 after the 20th case of "a settlement is under attack". Eventually after getting all the power armor, armor mods, legendary weapons and mods for those weapons killing anything and everything in Fallout 4 (except maybe for deathclaws) became an exercise in boredom.

The story in FONV is better, but fallout 4 can be fun with the right mods and playing on survival mode and fo4 has much better shooting/moving mechanics. I have over 3000 hours in fo4, but I keep it interesting via playing permadeath, if I die I have to start over. It is more intense and requires tactics exploring knowing you have to start over and lose 50 hours if you die. But even on survival, I made my own mods to reduce XP (level up much slower), reduce stimpaks (otherwise I will have hundreds), reduce adhesive (supposed to be rare, but is everywhere), reduce ammo, gave AI more damage, etc, and forget power armor, clunky, OP, and unneeded once you meet RR. Otherwise you become nearly invincible in later game. And game is ugly, so I use lighting mods, and "sometrees" mod and grass mod. I wouldnt use other tree/foilage mod other than the "sometrees) as they break precombines and cause CTD and large loss fps in some areas.

But without mods and playing on survival, it can get quickly boring. There are some very good character mods like "im darlene" and "heather casadin" that adds to the story. And bug fix mods "emogene takes a lover fix" and "unofficial fallout 4 patch" are needed to avoid any game breaking bugs.

I enjoyed the game, and still enjoy the game. I am currently playing through it again and I haven't done very many main missions (none of the minute men and a few of the BOS and Railroad). The key to my enjoyment is mods.

If you don't want to do the main story line but still play the game (and you don't mind some adult themes and language) you could try adding some quest mods, my current playthrough is using this series:

Fusion City Rising - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/22355

Outcasts and Remnants - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/21469

Project Valkyrie - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/28085

50 Ways to Die at Dr. Nick's - https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/25564

You go through the full range of events but in a new way that lets you decide how things end up, nothing has to go boom. It's home made, so some voice acting is better than others and the humor isn't always humorous, but I loved being able to get an entirely different ending where most everyone gets along.

Also check out trainwiz's quest mods https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/u...tab=user+files

Well I got it working good with mods, so that was a big hurdle. And it lots great, but it also doesn't look that different, my new PC sure runs it a lot better. So far I found the BoS so I'm playing a non-sneaky solider type. Having fun.

I guess of all the hours I've played tho, I never found many missions or what would be the equivalent of finding a big Barrow in Skyrim.

I have the vanilla version, so there's lot's of mods I can't use.

This game is all about the mods - one of the main reasons to play it after so many years. Similar to Skyrim - both are Bethesda after all.

There are many great mods for this game but beware, they mess up the save game and it's irreversible - I have crashes in certain areas of the map, workbench etc. so it's sometimes unplayable and the whole uninstall all mods, test one by one gets boring really fast.

I tried a bit of survival mode before, and I love it in ways. But I'm such a pack-rat, how can that be played and get enough ammo and money ? I know there's ammo/cap finder perks.

How much stuff do people carry around on survival ?

Time to go play more

Shoot things and pick-up stuff.

Right now I'm avoiding the main quest but quickly running out of missions, so I will be done the game soon.

I ignore "your settlements are being attacked" which is very annoying.

Most of the maps/DLCs have been done.

My mods are light in the order of 2 to 3 including removing the carry weight limit. Got tired of running back and forth to the settlements (hoarder) 4 or 5 times per mission.

One thing I've learned and the game discourages is exploration. You go to a place start blasting kill and pick-up everything, only to have a mission eventually send you to the same place only to clear it out again so you can complete the mission. Arghhh. I don't remember the Elder Scrolls doing that but its been a while since I've beaten Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim.

PS I'm about to open the red door on saving my son quest. Not sure what's behind the red door but just before that they supplied a Fat Man (already had one) in a nearby security room. But I doubt I will need that. But yes shooting a bunch of synths/robots and having a voice warn me to turn back is not very inspiring.

Eventually, I'll need to face the Institute.

The game is ok (6/10) but I can only tolerate playing while watching YouTube videos on the second monitor. Luckily Bethesda has moved away from the Gamebryo engine for their upcoming games but they are getting as bad as EA/Ubi/Activision etc... when it comes to monetization schemes and I may not even be playing their games in the future.

It's like playing Oblivion in a post apocalyptic setting. Far from what Fallout once was.

That's not necessarily a bad thing for everyone. Fallout 4 was the first one I played and I liked it so much that I went and bought the previous games. I didn't care for any of the previous games, I really wanted to like New Vegas but I couldn't even finish it.
