Cannot get stable 4.8ghz on an 8700k
I am having troubles getting a stable overclock with my 8700k @ 4.8ghz.
My components consist of.
-Asus Prime Z370-P
Thermaltake 600w Smart Series PSU
16gb DDR4 Team Group memory 2666
Noctua NH-U12S 120mm fan cooler.
This is a prebuilt NewEgg system and I added in the 1080ti and Noctua cooler.
I have followed some overclocking guides and I am getting intermittent crash to blue screen when gaming. Usually it happens 30-60 mins of gaming. If I remove the OC, I never get crashes.
While gaming, max temps I am seeing is 70* C
I have tried 4.8 @ 1.29 to 1.31v with no other changes in the BIOS. LLC is set to 6.
I notice in Prime95 during testing(blend test). When it ramps up power, I am seeing a 135-140w load and I see the highest temp of no more than 85*C. When it ramps up to this power Core voltage drops to 1.248V.(this is my concern of what my issue may be?) I am monitoring temps and watts with Core Temp and Voltage with CPU-Z.
When the test is running and power load is at 105-110watts core voltage is 1.29v. and temps are no more than 70*C
I can run the test for an hour (most I have ran so far) and it stays stable.
If I run lower than 1.31 volts it will crash after about 30mins of testing.
I have been reading my MOBO is very poor for overclocking. My concern is the voltage drop under higher load. Is this a sign of my PSU not being able to handle this? If it is a PSU issue, which PSU would be a good upgrade? Or is it a combo of my MOBO and PSU causing this voltage drop or is it normal?
