Upgrade time! Suggestions welcome :)

It's that time again. Looking to upgrade my current build in the most cost-effective way possible (no budget, but nothing unreasonable).

Current rig:
  • Motherboard: ASUS Z170M-PLUS MicroATX
  • Processor: Intel i7-6700K @ 4.25 GHz
  • RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16GB DDR4 3000MHz
  • CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X61
  • Graphics Card: EVGA GTX 1080 SC
  • Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD
  • Computer Case: NZXT H400i
  • Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified

I don't have my PC with me currently so can't do any benchmarks, but looking for general advice on what will bring this setup into 2020 and future proof it for 2-3 years.

Keep everything except cpu and mobo.. get Ryzen 3100/3300x/3600 and B450/550 OR get higher tier Ryzen.
OR go Intel 10th gen
Maybe throw in an NVME M.2 SSD.. you should be good to go...

This is in fact my plan I sort of have your set up difference is mobo and gpu.. oh speaking of GPU maybe throw a new gen gpu in there too.

Glad to see someone else is going through a similar situation

I'm totally open to switching over to AMD, but have personally never used any of their chips (CPU or GPU) in my builds ever. So here are a few questions:
  • Are they still notorious for running hot?
  • How well do they OC?
  • Are they stable/performant out-of-the-box?
  • What AIO water coolers are recommended?

Assuming the answers to the above are favorable, I'd likely look at a R9 3900x. Is that overkill? What mobo is best for it?

Any recommendations for the NVME M.2 SSD? What about GPU-wise?

Really looking for stability but a noticeable bump in performance. Not sure if those are two competing concepts or not

- Ryzen runs cool, 7nm vs 14nm.
- they don't really OC since PBO is a thing (RAM OCing = huge gains, though)
- they're plenty stable (lol?)
- an AIO isn't going to get you anything you can't get with an air cooler. Get an AIO if you want one but don't if you're expecting significantly better cooling.

X570 if you want PCI-E 4.0, X470/B450 if you don't care. Just be mindful of the VRM, you need a decent one with a 3900/3950X. Here's a list of B450/X470 boards with details on VRM capability, pretty much any X570 is going to handle the 3900/3950X fine.

for NVME, anything that isn't using QLC NAND (so no Intel 660P). Crucial P1, Muskin Pilot, HP EX900/EX920/EX950, ADATA XPG SX8100/SX8200/SX8200 Pro, ... tons of options. Samsung's drives are a good route too but they're expensive for what they offer.

GPU depends entirely on budget.

Intel i9 9900K Coffee Lake @ X8 5309mhz (+47.5%)
AMD FX-8320 Vishera @ X4 5022mhz (+43.5%)
Intel i5 4690K Haswell @ X4 5013mhz (+43.2%)
AMD X4 960T Zosma @ X6 4870mhz (+62.3%)

Appreciate the info - this helps a ton. I'm basically clueless since I haven't been following the latest and greatest in HW...apologies there.

Next question is: Do I get a bigger case to expand the mobo options? I've got an NZXT H400i right now with a micro-ATX board, so not sure how that affects your X570 recommendations.

Edit: Found this - https://www.microcenter.com/product/...erboard-bundle - thoughts?

For GPU, if there aren't any wicked good deals that would involve selling my 1080 for a substantial upgrade, I'd probably just keep the same card.

mATX boards/cases are rare and they become even more rare with each generation. It's best to get an ITX/ATX case as soon as possible to avoid any potential problems.

If I go AM4, how many generations do we think AMD will continue on with it? Just wondering as it will get more expensive than just the case...gotta factor fans in, rebuild, etc.

Just Ryzen 4000. After that it's DDR5 and AM5. But it's already been like 4 years of AM4, which is very impressive. Intel has never done/will never do that.

One, just Zen 3 = gen 4xxx
End 2021/Q1 2022 comes DDR5 and a new board - maybe AM5 for ryzen 5xxx
Bless the 5

Soo about suggestions what to keep with your current setup
Everything, till Q4 2020 - unless you can't wait

Then if you like compact, and care more about performance than fashion
Get an ASUS DTX Impact and wait with the gpu till mid June/start July
Many options are there, even upcomming APUs are wonderful options, up to your usecase and wait + monetary limit

Stability wise, like Pook mentioned
Zen 2 features precission Boost - with an Fitness module inside
It perfectly knows out of stock what kind of sillicon it has and what voltages to use
Soo it does overclock itself and boosts itself with variation down to 5-10ms (as update rate)

Ram is very important for ryzen, as L3 cache does relay on it's transfer speed towards the memory controller and IO-Die
Which means, Memory clock is important as much as low latency
There are architectural bottlenecks, which for example 3200CL16-18 will trigger
As 3rd gen doesn't use a new memory controller the maximum OC limits still apply
Which means the bottlenecking issue on slow fabric clock still plays a huge role
As big as 50fps on some titles

Else yes, it's stable as long as the user or the bios doesn't predict a mess
The cpu knows what to use, compared to some other options on the market
Still, if you can - wait it out
If you can't, why can't you ~ what's your usecase
Later we can decide then about budget vs reasonable spending decisions

Makes sense. I like your suggestion, just trying to keep costs low. So with a 3900X, what's the best bang for my buck when it comes to mobos? I'll likely run my GTX 1080 now and single cards in the future, but would like to add some NVME M.2 SSDs soon.
