Here are a couple of troubleshooting guides I've (just split from the original, as that was too big for a single attachment, but have) created at a couple of places I've worked - which I've used the training at an ISP and general troubleshooting I've done to write....

One is for ADSL (but can prolly be generalised for xDSL, as per the name) and the other is for Virgin connections. This is certainly good enough for getting UK internet connections sorted out, but a lot of what is in there should be transferable to other countries...

I've seen the light - it was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card.
