Thready First of all don't do ANYTHING that can void the warranty. Some cards don't let you mess with the thermal paste without voiding the warranty. Honestly, I would just email their customer service department because if your card is getting so hot that it's making a smell, the only thing that can be done is to RMA the card and get a new one. That's also the safest thing to do because that way you know 100% that you're getting the issue taken care of. If you try anything yourself and you end up doing something that you think might fix it, then a month down the road you might have the same problem and now you voided your warranty and it's all for nothing.

Sadly there's no VRM temperature, I already tested lots of monitoring softwares.

Ever since I got this card, I always run a custom profile through MSI Afterburner that when it goes to 50c the fan would go to 100% gradually. I also haven't overclocked this card yet. The problem is that when I set it to 100% the GPU emits a strange smell again. I haven't tested 45%~99% fan speed though. No smell on 40 and below.

Also guys do you know where I could buy some stock sapphire thermal pads, it seems there is one that has a slight tear (purple thermal pad) and another one that is folded in two (black thermal pad), I don't know if I could unfold it since it kinds of stick to each other. lol.

I need the stock ones since I'll try getting to RMA this card. I fear that when they see the thermal pads they will reject it.
Use GPU-Z to monitor VRM temps under "Sesonrs" tab (all the way at the bottom it shows VRM temps).

daguardian Some pics before and after you remove them would be good - someone may see a clue that might explain what is going on.

Overclockerrr Okay guys, will post it later with the pictures. Do I have to remove the thermal pads to give you guys a clear view?

If you can post some pics of what you find it will help to diagnose further.

As the others have said, giving it a good clean out and re-applying the thermal paste may be a good place to start.

NvNw You should start with taking it apart and cleaning it, even if you can disassemble the fan blades from the motor to clean the inside. When you have the bare pcb check if there is any choker or ram with a different color from the other ones.

Post any findings. thumb.gif

Vici0us You should run aggressive fan profile but it sounds like, you just might need to get a new heatsink.

daguardian Some more info - what card is it? How long have you been using it for?

I would not leave the fan at 20-30% whilst playing, make a custom profile using Afterburner.

Download GPUZ and check what the temperature of the VRAM's is - they could be frying.

Overclockerrr Hello guys! I'm normally just a lurker here with no account, but I can't find any info why the GPU is doing this so I decided to register and ask the gurus here! biggrin.gif

So I purchased this used GPU sometime ago, the owner has just used this for like 2 months. It has been with me for 7 months now. Today I noticed when the fan goes up to 100% when playing graphic intensive games like heavily modded Skyrim with tons of mods and ENB the GPU emits a strange smell, I don't know how to describe it. So now I'm staying at 20%~30% fan speed so it won't emit the strange smell but temps goes like 75c~80c when playing.

Any idea why? Also the fans seems to be weaker now at 100% since they aren't "noisy" anymore, but the fans are still spinning fast.
