afaik actually getting a developer to implement DX12's shared Nvidia+AMD GPU at the same time support requires the actual game to be setup for one card to do physics and the other to do textures etc.. this mean EACH dev has to custom write their entire game for the 0.00001% of people who decided to go out and buy both a 290x and a 970gtx to run together or have a slower older more bottlenecked card lying around for that extra performance. you get the point, its largely pointless but yea "new exciting things" did you get excited about Lucid Hydra ? because that was sucessful in what it set out to do but nobody gives a crap about it.
secondly, the shared GPU memory .. again this is nice and its what Mantle also has .. which means Vulcan probably could have it too .. but cards are coming out with 6gb and 8gb of VRAM ... so, that thread where people were running native 4k with 8k downsampling on the biggest baddest games and didn’t touch 8gb of VRAM .. again another nice feature but not a show stopper.
the take home is this.
Vulcan ( or whatever they name it )
all are about making it EASIER to access the GPU directly and also make more gpu calls at once i.e a 1000 calls at once, most of these API's are doing things that can already be acheived with smart efficient coding but rarely get implemented. What this allows for isnt some new god like special effect but more like making that 4k game running at 20fps run at 40 -60fps for no extra $$$ outlay per game.
which takes the PC to console levels of optimisation right ? wrong, because you can bet that for all the 40% - 50% improvements these API's give the Dev, the Dev will be lazy and waste it through not using traditional optimisations in their game.
ergo mostly this is just Hype
I think VULCAN/Glnext is the most interesting over the next few years as devs will want all their games to run max on SteamOS / Mac / Linux / Windows to maximise sales across platforms. Its not really about which is truly the best its about which one is going to give companies the flexibility to easily get games running top notch with cross platform support. As a consumer your not really in the driving seat here.. there are thousands of games good and bad the industry will decide what you get as the ruling API ..
