repez If I get a H170 board would I see any performance drop compared to a Z170 board in SSD performance? I want to get a Samsung 950 Pro 512GB M.2 as SSD... Thanks

Any aluminum or copper passive heat sinks should work fine. My personal choice is copper - just because - it's kind of like why do I need a CaseLabs chassis (?) Why do I need a water cooled system? Why overclock everything? Because I want to and can. Your choice to be "safe than sorry" is reason enough. I will put sinks on my SM951 simply to avoid hassle at a later time. Who wants to disassemble a water loop to put heat sinks on a drive tucked up under graphics cards and acrylic tubing? In my case, better preemptive than a reactive hassle.

Adhesive is a must for me, not thermal glue, some 3M (or equivalent) thermal tape. It sticks tight, but lets go with a small amount of effort and cleans off lickety-split with alcohol.

I want to eliminate the possibility of thermal throttling. Even if it supposedly never will in its lifetime due to the workloads I apply to it, I don't want that nagging "but what if it is throttling" in the back of my mind. Plus there is the issue of heat traversing to the VNAND chips themselves, which also will get less reliability as it's tortured with heat. So while it may not be apparent right away that "its fine", it could very well shorten the lifespan of the SSD.

Besides, $5 extra for a little peace of mind? I'm fine with that.

As for mounting the heatsink, something as simple as a little ziptie, or even tie it on with some string and put in some sort of spacer between the string and heatsink/ssd to cause tension and better contact is what I had in mind. I did not want to risk an adhesive heatsink becoming permanently stuck on and possibly pulling off the label or, worse, the chips themselves off the PCB. I'm not worried about the thermal conductivity of the label itself, because we're only talking a matter of 2-5 watts; A bare chip with no way to dissipate the heat will, like in the videos, easily reach >100c. But a little heatsink like the ones I linked is more than enough to bring that down 20-60c, depending on size and airflow because, like I said, its literally only 2-5 watts. It won't take much to bring the temperatures down.

I guarantee, once the 950 gets into consumers hands, there will be thermal videos like the one in my previous post to prove this will have thermal throttle problems in continuous read/write scenarios

How about you use the SSD first and if you will have heat issues (which you won't) outside of benchmarks, THEN think about heatsinks.
