Turfboy On my base temps for the GB x399 Aorus xtreem ie web work I get 42 C per Hardware Monitor.
When gaming or folding it runs 70 C.

I am letting AMD do the management of the CPU clocks. In general the web speed runs 3500 MHz and Gaming or Folding runs 3999MHz.

I am running a waterblock on both the CPU and GPU.


I placed a probe on the back of the board and it appears the back of the board runs quite hot.

Anything up to 120°C on VRM is still within specs, but it would cause faster aging of VRM. I would recommend to replace thermal pads on AsRock boards before overclocking 2990W, because the cooler mounted to it wasnt getting much hot.

Running any of those systems outside of a PC case, or without proper aiflow is also not a good idea.

Those blocks are not just decorative if the board is enclosed in a aircooled case and there is plenty of air flowing around them. But clearly... taking a saw and make some fins out of it would be more effective.

As to chips on the motherboard, the taichi uses the exact same components as the Zenith Extreme. You can complain about the 8+4 pin on the taichi, but it shouldn't be an issue outside of extreme over clocking. Now, it may have issues depending on circumstances with the 24 and 32 core chips, but that is more a cooling problem before it is getting power to the VRM.

I would expect same and worse issus on MSI board, as the VRM looks like a complete overkill. Also my previous experience with MSI was not very good.

AsRock used to have as bad or worse reputation, but when i saw the quality of the build in x399M taichi i gave it a try. The VRM has some specifics (mainly the Prochot switch and only 8+4 connector) , so I will understand that it will not perform as good as the Asus original.

Gigabyte was clearly concerned about the heat caused by the VRM. That itself is not a good sign.
