Speedster159 The only available Gigabyte board here is the Z390 Aorus Pro Wifi and I really don't like the feature set and layout on the board, I was trying to find the Ultra but even the distributor doesn't have it.

How much worse performance am I going to get if I take the ASUS Z390-E? In tangible terms.

Are there any offerings from MSI?

Test methodology is listed as
The installed Core i9 9900K processor was always overclocked to 5.0 GHz on all cores. We chose a relatively safe voltage of 1.3 volts, so that the overclock is sure to be stable. We perform two 20-minute runs in the Intel XTU stress test, recording the maximum temperature on both the front and back of the VRM components, measured with a Flir heat camera, just before the end of each run. Usually the second run is the warmest, but the difference between the two tests was never more than 3 degrees. The graphs always show the highest temperature measured.

Aorus Pro was 57°C on back and 59°C on front of the PCB , cooler than ROG Hero while using 15W less for margin of error difference in CB R15 (1402 for Aorus Pro vs 1399 for STRIX Z390-E)
Z390-E was 76°C on back and 74°C on the front of the PCB (119W load)
MSI Edge AC was 69°C on back and 66°C on the front of the PCB (122W load)
Taichi was 74°C on back and 73°C on the front of the PCB (127W load)


Z390-E should handle i9-9900k fine but wouldn't be my first pick.


Z390-H uses same setup as Z390-P :

If it has to be M-ATX the only really competent board for any OC seems to be the Maximus XI Gene. Most ITX boards are actually stronger.

For ATX there's a lot more options but they are all dwarfed by the incredible price / performance of the Gigabyte Z390 Ultra / Pro / Elite line-up in terms of VRM.

As far as 50A Vishay powerstages go, Aorus has 12 of them for CPU on the Z390 Elite , Pro, and Ultra. The Master uses 12x IR3553 powerstages. It was part of Gigabyte's overhaul of all their VRM designs after the Z370 mishaps.

If you just want something that runs cooler, rather than being more efficient then the Taichi is actually a better buy as well and even the MSI Z390 Edge (the discrete mosfet used is 10 rather than only 8 of them and the low side fet has around 33% less RDS(on)).

Okay, ignoring the Z390-H then.

But the Z390-E should be able to handle 5Ghz just fine right? Or are there better boards in the same price point more or less of the Z390-E and Z390-H? I want options from the same point.

AlphaC It is a terrible board for the money even if it can handle 5GHz "for gaming". It is using all discrete mosfets on a $200 board so you're paying for SupremeFX audio which is rebranded ALC1220 without an ESS DAC or TI op amp.

Z390-H for 9900K Enough?

Would a Z390-H be enough for a 9900K at 5Ghz all core, or would it only barely handle it at stock clocks?
