Martin778 Also hyped for the 3080Ti....can already tell you how it's going to look like for me:
1. 3080Ti comes out, the launch day models are mostly pretty crappy, me wants 3080Ti anyways so I buy something crappy like the Windforce
2. A model with better cooling comes out, like the Lighting-Z, which I buy.
3. Couple of months later the Kingpin or other bonkers model comes out, I sell the L-Z and buy that one.
4. Repeat for 4080Ti series

Z490 and AMD B550 boards are taking a very weird route, even the lower end Z490's are approaching €200+ and some B550's look better specc'ed than X570...

I have no idea where 1200 socket is going besides the frying pan lol but i was all ready for tr4
Maybe next time on 4k amd and what ever big dogs come with it tr5 ? I'm in no hurry really just waiting for 30 series nvidia to show up

Martin778 That's true, overall the price jump to TRX40 is quite extreme and other costs (think RAM) would be double. TRX40 boards aren't that much more expensive but it's all in the CPU...
X299 on the other hand is now cheaper than LGA1200 it seems but I was never fond of the CPU's for this socket.

Hi,
Price jump didn't make much sense for just 3960x 24 core from 3950x 16 core so I passed
I was all ready but let down when I saw the price double but core count didn't double.

Martin778 So little love for the Treadripper 3000 series though, almost nonexistent when compared to 3900/3950X. I know lots of folks buy X299 HEDT as 'toys' but Threadripper still has a long way to go before it also becomes a rich kid's toy too
I found manual OC to be a waste of time on my rig, just enabled PBO and let it do it's thing, with 3733 MHz RAM and 1:1 IF I'm just a tiny bit off hitting 14k in R20 but the ambient temp is getting too high to reach maximum boosts.

RichardNixon Thrilled to find a TR discussion thread. I'm surprised there isn't more momentum behind it. Awesome job, OP.

I'm finally building my first new system in 6+ years and my first transition to AMD. I'm doing a lot of virtualization heavy development work from home but also gaming during compilation and standups. Eagerly waiting for my 3970x to arrive.

Coming from the 2015 Intel scene I'm ready to overclock the **** out of everything and I'm slowly learning that AMD really isn't into the CPU overclocking too much. Is there an updated guide I can run through to catch me up on the important settings when dealing with Ryzen and specifically the TR line? I'm going to be running a custom loop and I like to aim for the highest OC I can run on a daily basis - no record setting here but a long-term stable OC to pull every cent I can out of this stupidly bad financial choice. I've found all the relevant info on the membench tool and general ddr4 settings so I'm looking for info on OCing the chip itself and anything that wouldn't be already tweaked from my ******* around with the memory settings.

I don't really use these platforms for productivity, I just like to test the new hardware and see how they perform in terms of overclocking/power/thermals. If I were to give some general advice, it would come down to:

- Does your workload benefit from AVX512 support?
Go for 10980XE.
- Do you benefit from PCIE 4.0 support or additional PCI-E lanes?
Go for Threadripper.
- How does your workload scale with the additional threads?
If it scales well enough, go for whichever Threadripper CPU you can afford. If you benefit from single threaded performance, go with 10980XE.
- Do you plan to overclock?
The 10980XE benefits more from overclocking and X299 is an easier platform to tune. Keep in mind both are hard to cool when pushed to the edge (500W+ CPU only power consumption). Cinebench R20 Mult-Threaded score increase when overclocked: 3970X = +19%, 10980XE = +45%.
- How important is platform reliability?
Intel has a better track record when it comes to general platform stability and BIOS support. X299 is also a very mature platform at this point. AMD at launch is usually a mess with patches and fixes. It's gotten better but they're still behind in this regard.
- Do you want ECC memory support?
If you need ECC memory support then Threadripper supports it, while you'd need to go the Xeon route with Intel.
- What's your budget?
If the above criteria are not deciders for you, in general I'd say below 1000 USD budget for the CPU, I'd go with 10980XE. Above that your only choice is really the Threadripper. It's worth considering X299 motherboards are available at much lower prices than TRX40.
