I worked out a deal to exchange. The 7970 was good, but I had numerous driver issues and I miss big green. I had some time to play with Afterburner today and the results were very impressive. biggrin.gif

A: You should embed the spreadsheet into the forum.

B: Once this gets going, you should keep a list of Member, Brand, Stock Speeds/Volts?Temps, Overclocked Speeds/Volts/Temps. Try to make it comprehensive with an easy to go to chart. thumb.gif

I'm on the look out for a third 7970 but I'll have to wait a couple of days for owners to start selling them cheap or newegg's price to drop under 480

If someone gets their card soon, can you run a test run (using fraps benchmark or something) running BF3 Ultra 1080p multiplayer? Trying to decide if I can get away with only 1 or if I should go sli with them.

WorldExclusive 03-22-2012 09:46 AM

Going from 580 SLI to one 680 would definately be a huge downgrade.

so then I should get 2 wink.gif? I am returning 1 of my 580s for what I paid and trying to sell the other for 360. So either I will get only 1 680 and save some money or get 2 and only have to spend roughly 120 or so.

Still a very good deal considering it's still mostly MSRP on Newegg. If you're really that upset, I'm sure you can sell it for a reasonably close amount and then buy the 680. Would do it quick though since the prices on the 7970 should drop sometime soon now.

i think im gonna wait and see, i thought about it, and I like AMD, i'm most familiar with their drivers and catalyst and such, ive upgraded far too much in the last month.

and the difference is theres a missing choke on the bottom one

Robilar 03-22-2012 10:32 AM

Got mine.

Paid $499 each. The cheapest 7970 is Canada is just shy of $600. Not to mention I have had too many bad experiences with Crossfire in the past.

Ooooh. Can you do some tests for us?

Say run a few benches with single card then pop in the second and run the same tests with the same settings so that we can get an idea of the scaling with Kepler?

Also I'm interested in how they overclock.

Bear in mind though, I have a 120hz monitor so that may skew the results slightly.

It really only affects overclocking and overall power delivery. If you don't plan on overclocking then you really shouldn't be worried.

Even then it is just a gimmick 99% of the time. Some of the highest clocking cards I've ever seen running stable were reference and under water.

froggyluv 03-22-2012 11:02 AM

Hi, n00b question but how will SLI work when the clocks are dynamic? Could this lead to underwhelming clockspeeds as they attempt to scale?

They do. It is already listed and I am already in que at #63 to get one. Super lucky story. Got a GTX 580 3GB for only 100 bucks (brand new too, friend basically wanted my comp and for what he paid, was able to upgrade cpu, gpu etc) Now not 60 days later, the 680 comes out and EVGA throws it up on the Step-up program. So me gets a brand new gtx 680 for FREE.99 (well sans the 100$ upgrade cost to get the 580) cannot wait. Hopefully EVGA gets a new shipment in this week, I imagine they will though if the que for step-up is already going down.

I've actually changed my mind and am going to stick with my 7970s. Some more reviews have surfaced which are extremely fair and the difference is so slight it's not worth losing the money on the cards I have.

Yeah I'm a little tired of the whole re-releasing cards a few months later with more VRAM. They should release everything at the same time. I suppose it is a business at the end of the day, oh well. I'm quite sated with two reference cards ^^

120hz would be the way to go. Depends on your budget though. My 27" Samsung is an absolute beast but a bit on the pricey side.

The new BenQ 23" looks to be pretty good.
