I still don't see the allure of an M2 drive with SSD Sata being much cheaper.

Personally I was actually going to pick one up until they announced they dropped nvme support. I'll wait till the next generation when they add it back in again. thumb.gif

stony404 02-25-2015 04:11 AM

I saw that and some benchmarks. I just brought a x99 setup so couldn't resist

TonyVi 02-27-2015 09:51 AM

I hope you get the drive, but I looked over their About Us page and it doesn't look legit. Let us know how it worked out

stony404 02-27-2015 10:13 AM

You mean the images at the bottom? Yeah saw that after I ordered redface.gif/

They are responding to email so I am still positive. However it has not been sent out yet as they tell me that they have been closed for Chinese new years. Apparently it will go out on Monday or Tuesday and I will get a tracking number. I will be much happer then!

I'll keep you updated

garikfox 02-27-2015 01:39 PM

As long as your X99 comes with the Full speed M2 slot your gonna be one happy person !

The SM951 is simply the BEST SSD currently out, hands down ! smile.gif

Just installed my xp941. Crazy fast. Yeah let us know how it goes.

does anybody know a EU retailer?

stony404 03-05-2015 12:41 AM

So to update you all.

I am not going to be receiving the sm951 from os store they sent me this.

" I am sorry we tested stock , it is not the right slot for you"

They offered me a refund which i have recived. so it looks like a valid shop just hard to speak to because of the language barrier.

So I'm off to find.it.from somewhere else

Why does this always happen. I spend days looking for links and can only find a shop in hong Kong.

This morning in found this in 10 min.....

Made an account just to thank you, OP. I ordered a 256 GB SM951 from them about 3 hours ago. They are going fast, but they are legit.

Here is the e-mail response I got from them:

Hi. Thank you for your order with us, your business is much appreciated. I can reassure you, that this drive is legit, it is Samsung SM951 original, we just received 15 units of 256 and 512GB as samples, regular delivery should start by end of March. We have stock at the moment and will ship your order tomorrow morning. All the best .

Marian

I read nothing but good reviews about them, so I went ahead and made the leap and purchased one. I had to call my bank to allow the charge to go through on my debit card (probably because it is an international vendor), but other than that, no problems.

Anyway, thanks again OP. If you hadn't posted this, I wouldn't have found them in time, if at all.

stony404 03-05-2015 01:59 PM

Np, Yeah got a 256 as well. They, flexx, seem rapid I have a tracking number already there's an out side chance I'll get it tomorrow.

Fingers crossed

stony404 03-06-2015 01:18 AM

Received my sm951 this morning. Will post bench marks later this evening or tomorrow.

CallsignVega 03-06-2015 04:30 AM

Thanks for the Flexx link! I saw they had one 512GB left so I grabbed it. $450 is really cheap for this drive IMO.

RobTal22 03-06-2015 07:36 AM

They have one 512GB left and three 256 GB left if anyone is still looking. They were sold out last night, guess some people cancelled their orders or something.

Yes, but when compared to actual real-world usage? No.

Have you had a chance to test drive it yet? Did it work okay for you?

According to DHL tracking, mine is still being carried around by a Hill Giant in EAST MIDLANDS - UK. Hopefully, it gets here at the end of next week.

flexxmemory.co.uk just got a bunch more in stock - they have 20+ units of 512 GB and 20+ units of 256 GB - grab one if you want one. I still haven't gotten mine in. DHL is dicking around with the package - said it would be delivered yesterday, never happened, now it says today, but it's almost 7:30 PM and I'm guessing I'll be waiting a few more days or until I call and ***** at someone. When I selected the express shipping option, it said UPS. It never said anything about DHL, but if you read their shipping and return policies, they say that they use UPS or DHL and have the right to switch to one or the other no matter what you selected at checkout. I paid $25 for express shipping that is gonna end up being really late - guess I should have paid for the cheaper $17 royal mail with tracking number option.

RobTal22 03-10-2015 05:31 PM

Nevermind, DHL guy pulled up right as I got done *****ing and moaning in my previous post. So order away.

I live in northeast Arkansas, about an hour outside of Memphis, TN. I ordered the drive Thursday afternoon 3/5/2015. I chose the $25 express shipping option. They shipped the drive out the next day, Friday 3/6/2015. I just got it last night, Tuesday 3/10/2015. So it was pretty fast. No problems with customs - hopefully they use UPS and not DHL when they send yours.

I just looked on their website and it has this message on the SM951's now:

"No stock at the moment, but we take preorders. Expected item arrival date is 11th Mar 2015"

So if you are one of those preorders, it may not ship out until Thursday if they get them today 3/11 like they think they will.

It's kind of surprising to me that the only place in the world that seems to have any of these SM951's in stock is in Northern Ireland of all places. I know they've moved on from the troubles and it's a nice place to live from what I've read, but it doesn't strike me as a place that would be home to a computer memory company that has a hook-up with Samsung. I mean you can't find these ANYWHERE, but a small store in N. Ireland snaps its fingers and gets a shipment of 40-50? Maybe other places have them but haven't started selling them or something.

I watched you install Windows 8 on that SSD in your youtube video. Stupid question: what medium are you installing Windows 8 from? a DVD? a USB drive? Does the medium from which I am installing Windows prevent the drive from writing at full speed? So, if I use a Windows 7 DVD to install, will the SSD be bottleneck'd by the optical drive's read speed?

I should know, but does Windows load from the DVD to the RAM then run the install from the ram? I don't have a very deep understanding of how a Windows 7/8 OS install actually works besides just clicking "next" 10 times on GUI.

Cool Mike 03-11-2015 04:56 AM

When I ordered it just showed in stock. Charge in pending on my credit card. So far so good. The only expedite shipping was DHL, so I went with that. Hopefully it will ship today or tomorrow
4 days is very good coming from the uk.

Yeah it was definitely fast shipping coming from UK. It's just that it was scheduled for Monday delivery, and the tracking said it was with courier and out for delivery on Monday. However, by the end of the day Monday, the DHL guy never showed and it got a hold put on it and I got worried. I google'd stuff about DHL holds and was reading a lot of horror stories about DHL, so I was starting to really get worried. Thankfully, it all went smoothly.

I remember it just showing in stock as well, but it has that new preorder message now. When they replied to me, they said regular shipments would not start until end of March, so I was surprised to see the inventory shoot up to 20+ all of a sudden. The preorder makes sense, just surprised they are getting them that much sooner than they expected.

Cool Mike 03-11-2015 07:18 AM

Showing 25 in stock NOW!

My status is "Shipped". WOW biggrin.gif

I use Usb 3 thumb drive with windows 8, but you can use optical for boot just in UEFI mode for Pcie drive.
Instaling from USB will be much faster, coping (to the hard drive not RAM) all those files from disc will take a while , not sure how much faster it is, since i cant remember when i did my last installation using DVD.
My guess would be 2x faster probably more
optical drive will be your botlleneck since DVD max read for 24x is around max 33MB/s , then it needs to spin up every time it need something to read ....
USB 3 thumb drive speed will depend on the brand you have some are slow 35MB/s other like San Disk Extreme can reach 220MB/s read as compared with regular sata ssd write would be over 300MS/s -500MS/s depend on the drive, P3700 400gb has 1000MB/s write.
* You should not act or rely upon this information without seeking formal professional counsel wink.gif

It might be not that much better, but Nvme will help with access time for sure
If sm951 had Nvme there would be no point of p3500 3600 or 3700 for regular person, Intel of course will last many times longer
Will make video next week by friday p3700 400Gb vs sm951 512Gb vs xp941 256Gb

Will not boot. Mother bOard is the asrock x99 pro with the latest 1.5 bios. 951 shows up as a storage device but not as a boot device.
A samsung 941 works fine. I was thinking as many others that if the motherboard boot with the 941 it would with the 951.
Any tips or tricks.

Maybe asrock need to update the bios

Update: was able to load win 8.1 using uefi usb stick. 951 still will not. Boot. mad.gif

opt33 03-16-2015 06:17 PM

did you enable UEFI in bios boot. If so, then maybe needs bios update.

Cool Mike 03-16-2015 08:26 PM

Yes did that. These sm951's are hot off the press. Thinking asrock, asus, giga have updates coming soon.

Anybody have a non levono sm951 (samsung branded) booting on a desktop rig?

I will contact AsRock tomorrow.

Cool Mike 03-17-2015 05:32 AM

Stony,

I am having problems getting my SM951 to boot up as a boot device with my Asrock X99 with latest software. Using usb stick with 8.1(UEFI)

Any suggestions?

Does anyone have a SM951 booting on Desktop RIG? If so, what motherboard? Thanks

I can confirm that the SM951 is also bootable on a supported motherboard. I tested this with an ASUS Z97 Deluxe using the latest 2205 BIOS and the SM951 shows up like any other drive in the boot menu.

I was thinking of getting it until they dropped nvme support and was wondering if would boot....but anandtech booted it on asus mobo Z97 deluxe with latest bios, just scroll down to bottom of that link under bootable: one other person also I believe on asus mobo just had to enable some storage eufi boot options to get his to work...(which you have done). but yeah just need mobo/bios support.

i had simmilar problems with p3700 and bit of playing with xp941 -but both boot.
i remember on asus board had to do with CSM settings
aand should show that hard drive twice one uefi and regular try both.

you said windows 8 can start from usb - does install or anything?

MountainGoat 03-17-2015 03:15 PM

I'm from german and ordered by flexx the 512GB version.
Installed in a Asrock X99 WS and booted from usb into uefi Win8.1 ...
The Windows installer detected the drive and installed fine. After the first reboot the system find no bootable devices...
I have tested some bios settings... No luck...
For an hour i contacted Asrock and afterwards i updated the bios to the latest Beta 1.69e with the same result:

The Samsung SM951 is not bootable with Asrock X99 WS

Any ideas???

Now Asrock updated the compatibility site for the X99 WS:

Samsung quoted 2-3X faster random read and write 4k speeds with nvme, which would be biggest noticeable increase in normal 24/7 computer use since intel came out with x25m. The limiting factor on all current drives is parallelism at small 4k random read/write. Which is why Samsung wanted to push nvme out the door, but likely got held back from oem builder concerns about compatibility issues.

It isnt the sequential speeds, those are so blazing fast on sm951 that increasing them some more isnt going to be that noticable in current normal use.

Burt Macklin 03-18-2015 07:25 PM

One quick question:
I'm running X79 Asus MBO (so, M.2 is not an option) - if I were to stick SM951 to PCIe adapter and plug it in like that, would there be any issues (slower speeds, for example, or whatever else)?
Would that even work?

If the answer is "go for it!", can someone suggest which adapter to buy?
Thanks!

tistou77 03-19-2015 08:07 PM

Hello

I tested a SM951 256GB of a friend (I have not received mine mad.gif) on Windows 7
Is that with Windows 8.1, the performance would be better?

The driver (controller) in Windows 7 is msachi.inf and with Windows 8.1 is storachi.inf (which will be better?)
I find that 4K-QD32 (Crystal Disk Mark) and 4k-64 (AS SSD) under Windows 7, the performance is much lower compared to the SM951 512GB under Windows 8.1

Thanks smile.gif

My SM951 is running perfect on the ASrock X99 Pro. Bench numbers are the Same as when running on the Rampage extreme V.
Glad I picked up one from Flexx. When these hit Newegg I bet the price will be $549+
I've owned the XP941 (512gb) also. The 951 (512gb) is about 60% faster with writes and about 110% faster with reads.

(1) Do i need to install any kind of SSD management software for the SM951? i am using the Intel Latest INF package for my MB.

(2) Are any of you actively cooling this thing? the tweaktown review said this SM951 gets toasty under load. i was planning on putting some memory heatsinks on the 3 main chips but would appreciate any pictures of your proven solutions before i get my gorilla hands on this tiny thing..

(3) Similar to (2) above, i moved my graphics card from PCI-E 1 to PCI-E 2 so it wasnt covering up my M2 slot and helping with airflow. am i losing any graphics performance by doing this with a single card? my reading says i get 16 pipes either way but what i dont know about x99 architecture would fill a large library....

I few answers from my viewpoint.

No management software needed. Just load the drivers supplied with the MB. Your MB has the Ultra M.2 (PCIe 3.0 X4) slot so you can achieve max speeds.

(2) Are any of you actively cooling this thing? the tweaktown review said this SM951 gets toasty under load. i was planning on putting some memory heatsinks on the 3 main chips but would appreciate any pictures of your proven solutions before i get my gorilla hands on this tiny thing.. The XP941 is much hotter than the SM951. I would not put any heat sinks on the 951. It was designed just as is. We all know Samsung builds a great SSD.

No, you will see no difference moving your card.
I put my dual 290x card (Devil 13 Dual core) on a 3.0 X8 and saw maybe a 1-2% drop in benchmarking. Keep in mind this was two 290x's on one 3.0 8x slot. So, a single GPU card will see almost no difference vs. a 3.0 16x slot. Bottom line, the PCIe 3.0 slots have a enormous about of bandwidth.

Hope this helps

I would put some heatsinks on the controller. The drive doesn't need them in order to stay alive but if you read the anandtech review you'll see that it throttles a lot. So if you put some heatsinks you'll have better performance

The temperature sensor of the SM951 is situated where?
In bench, it does not exceed 32°C

Hi all,
I am new here so here goes.
Anyone know if the sm951 will work on the asus x99 deluxe.
I was thinking of building a pc with this board?

Thanks
Rod.

tistou77 03-22-2015 12:36 PM

The SM951 work on the Asus Rampage V Extreme, so it's ok on X99 Deluxe, I think

Roders 03-22-2015 12:50 PM

Thanks for that. If anyone knows of any issues please post.

I think I now need to add a signature so that I stick to the rules etc..

Rod

anandtech review says that after continuous 2min transfer the drive begins to throttle and reaches almost 90 degrees C

Roders 03-23-2015 04:26 AM

I thought that was the case. I will be fitting some chip heat sinks on mine with a fan possibly attached.

Mark the Bold 03-24-2015 07:44 PM

Overkill, I know. But I will sleep soundly at night knowing its not stifling in the heat. I hot glue gunned a 40mm scythe fan to the back of my 780ti card. Its ghetto, I know. But its "cool"...

Are you using the sm951 as the boot drive, if so how well were you able to set it up and install windows.

Cool Mike 03-25-2015 10:36 AM

Windows installs just like installing on a Sata SSD or hard-drive. Much faster install of course. Just make sure you have a Motherboard that supports the SM951 as a bootable drive.

I have verified two MB's that will boot from the SM951. Make sure you install the latest and greatest motherboard BIOS.

Asus Rampage V Extreme
ASrock X99 Professional

Roders 03-25-2015 01:25 PM

THANKS, shame it's not compatible with the asus x99 deluxe.

+1 for the AsROCK x99x Killer Fatal1ty. Boots & recognizes just fine.

Cool Mike 03-25-2015 06:44 PM

ASrock has been doing a great job with BIOS updating as of late.

My ASrock x99 Professional Fatal1ty is running flawlessly with the SM951.

Mark the Bold 03-25-2015 10:55 PM

^^^
Agreed. The customer service was outstanding when I contacted them about my issue. Responded within a couple of hours, and had a BETA bios sent over from their Chinese overlords within a day. I'm an Asrock lifer now. First non-Gigabyte MB since my DFI Lanparty and there is no looking back.....

Cool Mike 03-26-2015 10:21 PM

Just picked up the new Samsung 250GB EVO M.2 SSD for the other M.2 slot on my ASrock Pro.

Using it as a storage device. Running great.

Mark the Bold 03-29-2015 09:25 AM

I have (2) 160GB Intel G2 SSD's in my rig with nothing to do for them.

I am thinking about creating a RAID 0 array with them, but I fear all the "there's no point to RAID 0 with SSDs lmao" response I will get.

Hey guys is there anyone that knows the differences between all these models of SM951?

MZVPV256HDGL-00000
MZHPV256HDGL-00000
MZHPV256HDGM-00000
MZHPV256HDGL-000L1

Thanks.

Eddie Obscurant 03-31-2015 07:55 AM

The MZHPV256HDGL-000L1 is a lenovo part . Different power/performance spec design for lenovo laptops

h00bi 04-02-2015 07:32 AM

MZVPV256HDGL-00000 -> new SM951 NMVe version
MZHPV256HDGL-00000 -> common SM951 AHCI version
MZHPV256HDGM-00000 -> GL and GM refer to NAND package density. Afaik, there is no 256GB version with "GL" NAND. I guess somebody took the PN of the 128GB SM951 (MZHPV128HDGM-00000) and just changed the 128 to 256.
MZHPV256HDGL-000L1 -> Last two refer to specific customer versions. L1 for lenovo makes sense.

MZVPV256HDGL-00000 This one I will hopefully find and buy. Did a search and could not actually find any in stock anywhere.mad.gif

give it some time, SM951 NVMe is a brand new item.
I guess ramcity will be one of the first vendors to have it, they have been very quick on XP941 and on SM951 AHCI

tistou77 04-02-2015 07:23 PM

The SM951 NVMe will be best than the SM951 AHCI?
Even under Windows 7?

Thanks
