I had some of the most fun with my rigs folding. It is not like you feel the general public understands folding, so you must stay in a group. I ask, do I need to buy a high end GPU to get back into folding? I still have my watercooled rig. I could divert the loop to the gpu and run the cpu on air (I7-970). Not much money in my wallet (I am disabled) but would like to help, again. I ask, what GPU to get to help with the folding?

None, because you cannot buy GPUs right now. Thanks to mining companies gobbling all the GPUs and making huge orders of ASIC silicon etc.

I fold on all my cards that are supported. Currently, 5770, r7 370, 7870, and 1070.

They all do okay. 1070 smashes in 6 hours what the 5770 and 370 and 7870 combined do in a day darn near though.

Dunno if I should start mining, I already have a grand's worth of hardware according to ebay's super bloated prices

Yesterday, I was looking at m.2 drives when I noticed a GTX 1060 costs $500. Then I kinda assumed it was due to a spike in mining and researched it a bit and couldn't believe it. Micro Center had 64 GPU's in stock lol. Mostly low end ones. So, my 2 MSI EK Hawk 1070's were $350 ea. and I saw closed auctions on eBay for over $500 used.

Kinda was thinking about selling them lol. But, I wouldn't be able to buy any after I did. Then I thought I should mine, watched 1 video, and got frustrated by how advanced the whole process is.

Anyway, long story short, yes GPU's are the best to fold on in terms of PPD per watt ratios by far.

Just download NiceHash, let it run the benchmark, and when it's done off you go. ez

Set up a wallet if you don't have one already, too. After about ~$150 it'll cash you out. Depending on how much hardware you have mining depends when you'll get paid.

I mine on my old 950/970/750 Ti at night/when I'm not home and it puts a few bucks in my pocket.

If you're looking for maximum point production and efficiency out of your hardware, it's definitely best to use a modern (within the past couple of generations) GPU. There are some new Core AX7 CPU work types which support AVX (for CPUs that support it, but I don't think the i7-970 does), although I'm not sure how common these are and it seems to be mostly older A4 units. If you could pick up a 900 series GPU for a decent price, that might be worthwhile.

Yep, I did that yesterday. That's ironic.

Just started folding again after several inactive years and wow are GPU's the breadwinners now. Getting almost 700k PPD off two GPU's. I remember back in the day it was amazing to get close to 50k PPD with GPU's and a CPU with bigadv.

Hopefully the forums stay active. I'll do my best to get into the January Foldathon once it comes around.

Hey, I'm just curious, are you on overclock.net or some other site?
Recently I saw a mirror site that had threads ending in January, about the same time as the last post before you replied to it. Maybe you've been pushed to a site like that.

Also you obviously chose stuff that looked interesting to me so I like your tastes, just dissapointed to find the rest to be so old.

No, I just started looking around in here and noticed a topic about GPU's and rather than create one I figured I'd just bump up an old one.
