Guess I better start brushing up on Linux. There's no way I'm paying a monthly fee for an OS I'll have no control over.

Sensationalist BS title and not even the original source: https://www.zdnet.com/article/micros...a-monthly-fee/

It's a continuation of O365 per-user licencing, and a service more on par with MDM/AirWatch. If you have experience with BYOD at work, you should be pretty familiar with what those do.

Last I checked, you can still buy Office 2016 without getting 365: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/of...%3aoverviewtab

Inb4 the anti-microsoft brigade.

Microsoft will make Windows a subscription service. It's not a question of 'if,' but 'when.'

Microsoft offering customers a new way to purchase software licenses is the most evil thing they can do.

I'm of the unpopular opinion in that I like Windows 10 on my personal machine (with some big caveats though). I've had no issues with it. I'm not saying that there aren't issues, I deal with them everyday at work, just to be clear on that. My main gripe, as is most everyone that hates Windows 10, is the forced updates. It now makes sense though. They force updates to wreak havoc for businesses when the updates break crap, and then out of the kindness of their hearts, offer a way to get rid of those headaches for a monthly fee. I mean, this is brilliant. I feel stupid for wishing Microsoft would give us control back when we can just pay them even more money to control it for us.

If they push this on everyone someone will break it. Sometimes the pirated version is the best version lol.
My W10 machine can't even tell me if there is an update available so there's likely already a way around it.

Yet another reason I am so glad I have kept my beautiful trustworthy windows 7. Never going to upgrade unless they can produce a windows 7 like version. Hell I would go back to windows xp before I touched windows 10.

IMO 10 is better than 7 but not by default. The search feature is very nice, like a shortcut to pretty much everything on your PC.
Either way all the problems people have with 10 can be solved with O&O then using CCleaner (to remove bloat) but do all of the updates first or you'll need to repeat a bunch of stuff. O&O prevents Windows from installing apps, updating and pretty much all the stuff that makes it seem like you're the user and MS is the owner.
Not trying to talk you out of windows 7 at all but if they day ever comes just try what I've said here. I started with making custom .iso of 10 with everything stripped but after trying O&O imo that's a much easier way to go and it doesn't break anything.
Custom skins are actually pretty easy to install these days.

I have worked on many PCs that have windows 10 on it so I am aware of the tools used to remove spying, block certain hosts and updates, using O&OShutit to further block things. I've pulled all the bloat out but its still a disaster, its still got bugs, there are so many services that simply can't be disabled using any tools or even something like autoruns. I'm also a gamer and put game performance as a priority above everything else and windows 10 just can't match the performance of 7 no matter how stripped out it is.
