[TechSpot] Google wants you to update Chrome right now

Public service announcement if you use Chrome:

Quote:

Google is urging Chrome users to update their browsers immediately after a zero-day exploit that could give hackers direct access to a user's OS has been found. The most recent version is 72.0.3626.121, and it's the version you want to be running to make sure you're safe from this exploit.

Google is urging users to update Chrome across all platforms after a critical vulnerability was discovered and patched.

Well-known Chrome security researcher Justin Schuh concisely addressed the urgency of this update on Twitter:
Quote:

Also, seriously, update your Chrome installs... like right this minute. #PSA

I guess you have to force users to get rid of their adblockers somehow lol

They seem to have backtracked on that idea... for now.

Hi,
Hard to update something one doesn't have installed.

Doesn't Chrome update automatically? Why do they want us to do it?

Because Google in its infinite wisdom likes doing slow staged rollouts and its scheduled method software might not grab the update quickly.

It updates itself. You can check the version and when you do it will update if necessary on it's own.

UltraMega 03-07-2019 11:08 PM

They have to be able to send out some kind of command to chrome to tell it to update ASAP as needed. I'm no security expert but why do I have the google updater enabled in msconfig if it can't even update as needed? It has to be able to...

If Chrome cant do this then FAIL.

Corporate environments might prevent this. I have usage stats showing some of our users are on Chrome 58.

Yup, the PSA is more or less for admins to force the update to the new version. General consumers are likely already automatically updated.
