Is a used enterprise/server SSD good for gaming/storage?

A used Micron M510DC 480GB is selling for relatively cheap price. Is this enterprise SSD good for gaming or is it better to use a consumer-grade SSD?

500gb SSDs are already really cheap brand new. There's no reason it wouldn't work well enough but I wouldn't pay more than $40 for any used 500gb SSD.

They should be showing you the SMART, they all tell you how worn out they are, if they aren't showing you it's good to sell the drive I might assume isn't?

It's about half the speed of comparable SSDs in 4k random. Decent sequential performance. If it's really cheap, go for it. If not, try to find another SSD for the same or slightly higher price.
Still wayyy better than HDD though, so get the M510DC if that's your only other alternative.

I was told it is functionally in like new condition.

If I pull up a SMART status, what should I be looking for to indicate its health? i.e., Crystal Disk Mark

Lifetime write cycles, how many left.

How many hours and how much in GB or TB's has been written to the drive.

It won't be faster than a decent consumer grade unit but assuming it hasn't had a hundred billion cycles on it then it should last forever.

is a intel 520 480gb for $30 worth it? it has 39 TB written on it.

white owl 04-04-2019 11:13 PM

It's not a great deal, decent SSDs are about $0.11/GB brand new so $30 for a roughly 5-7 year old SSD is pretty meh. I'd think it would be slow compared to today's budget drives.
