[TechPowerUP] NVIDIA Releases GeForce Drivers that Add DXR to Select GeForce GTX GPUs

Quote:

NVIDIA today released the year's most important GeForce driver update, version 425.31 WHQL. The drivers enable DirectX Raytracing (DXR) API support for GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, GTX 1660, GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1070, and GTX 1060 6 GB, in addition to TITAN graphics cards based on the "Pascal" and "Volta" architectures. The DXR workload is executed by the CUDA cores entirely, which makes these GPUs significantly slower than NVIDIA's RTX 20-series chips that have dedicated hardware such as RT cores and tensor cores. We've detailed this in our special article. In addition these drivers add Game Ready optimization for "Anno 1800," and fix a number of issues listed below.

NVIDIA Also Releases Tech Demos for RTX: Star Wars, Atomic Heart, Justice Available for Download

We've seen NVIDIA's move to provide RTX effects on older, non-RT capable hardware today being met with what the company was certainly expecting: a cry of dismay from users that now get to see exactly what their non-Turing NVIDIA hardware is capable of. The move from NVIDIA could be framed as a way to democratize access to RTX effects via Windows DXR, enabling users of its GTX 1600 and 1000 series of GPUs to take a look at the benefits of raytracing; but also as an upgrade incentive for those that now see how their performance is lacking without the new specialized Turing cores to handle the added burden.

Well Time to wait for people to try this new driver and figure out how bad it really is or if it actually works well on 10xx series cards

Updated with the Tech Demos Nvidia Also Released today, including the drivers.

This was just released to show how poor performance is without dedicated hardware. They should of did this from launch for the RTX series.

Hi,
As long as ones favorite color is bsod blue or just doesn't mind tanking fps then by golly make sure you try this driver :)

Personally if I ever get up to this version driver I will know in advance how to disable these new features.... so thanks for the warning.

AMD making a splash again. We know DXR works with Vega and we also have Radeon VII, so why hasn't AMD released their own drivers? Always last to the parade.

gib "dedicate to ray tracing" feature like "dedicate to physx"

what driver do you use atm, n on what card?

I've been having some weird game launch issues, and graphical errors that I'd love to blame on 417. I'm rocking 97k n 1080tis

Yep, they're just trying to drive RTX sales before Intel and AMD make their splash with generic path-tracing hardware.

funny thing is, performance still gets tanked with RTX on, via RTX card, right?
