[The Verge] Oppo unveils the world’s first under-screen selfie camera

Quote:

The past couple of years of smartphone design have been dominated by debate over how best to increase the screen-to-body ratio, and where to put critical components on devices that are dominated by their screens. The holy grail is, of course, the ability to integrate them directly into the display, as we’ve already seen with fingerprint sensors — and selfie cameras are next.

Oppo, a company that’s done its share of anti-bezel experimentation with display notches and pop-up selfie cameras, is the first to demonstrate an under-screen camera to the public at MWC Shanghai this week, after a tease earlier in the month. Alongside the showing, Oppo has revealed more information about how the technology actually works.

Most excellent news! The days of that damned notch is finally numbered, and I look forward to a 100% notch-free experience in the next year or two. :)

They could remove the selfie camera altogether I wouldn't mind.
As long as I have my jack for my iem.

The selfie camera has its uses, although I wouldn't mind it going away either, seeing as the number of selfies I've taken in the past 2 years I can literally count with two hands.

Headphone jack NEEDS to stay. Don't care how much BT buds are the rage, I still prefer my wired connection. If nothing else I enjoy being given a choice at the very least.

i'd 100% buy a high end device without a front facing camera.

Nokia N72 was the last flagship without the stupid front cam.

I like the pop up cameras better. I use my selfie camera maybe 2 times a year. And having the camera inside the phone when not in use adds a little privacy.

I like the selfie cam. Not for pictures, but it works as a great mirror.

TFW everyone in this thread is too ugly to like the front camera :P

I probably use the front camera four times as much as the rear camera. It's obvious you guys aren't big on social media - which is fine, but you're in the minority.

I use the "selfie" camera everyday, not for selfies, but for video communication......ie google duo, skype, messenger...etc.
Without a front facing camera this type of communication doesn't work.

Lots of brands have been working on this but with all the caveats and no expected date given by Oppo the question of who will have first "usable" model to market is still a question.
Virtually never used the front camera until I had a kid but now it sees a fair amount of use.
