A typical powerstage is around 90-93% efficient (70A TDA21472 is closer to 95%) so if you go by Anandtech's figure of 15-18W per core you're looking at about 180-216W maxed out. In turn to get <2W of heat per powerstage you'd need around 10 of them (if you go by powerout = 216W , the input is 240W so it's 24W of waste heat); 8x powerstages would be closer to 3W so if your thermal resistance is around 30°C/W you're looking at hitting around 100°C with a 30°C board temp. This is sort of balanced out by Asrock using FP 12k hour capacitors instead of 5K hour ones.

Of course if you're going for 8 core or less this is a non-issue essentially. For 12 cores+ I'd probably go for Aorus boards , MSI ace/Creation, Asus ROG Hero , Asrock Taichi or higher especially if airflow is poor. It remains to be seen how well TUF does (the Prime Pro is the same story).

You're telling us that basically the bottom half of the new x570 boards that they're selling, aren't fit for the 12 cores? That mean they're shooting their own feet (board makers and amd), I find such insight so ridiculous, I'll believe it when 3rd party reviews say so.

Your message is garbled but if the 3900X is running at stock it isn't consuming nearly the amount of power it would overclocked or on PBO.

Also if the price differential for a good board over a low end X570 is about $30-40 at best, why would you chance it?

The B450 Pro Carbon is $130ish and can run 3900X at stock but would you put a 12 core on it? If the answer is no, then the answer should also be no for the X570 Gaming Plus / X570 Edge / X570 Pro4 / X570 Phantom Gaming 4.


There's 2 options when the power delivery isn't adept for the workload: you throttle or you heat it up.

CB R15 isn't an AVX workload such as Blender or x264 / x265

Budget X570 is called X470.

The bulk of mobos remains to be reviewed and comparisons made. To see exactly the differences in RAM layouts and VRMs on 3950X. All testing so far of VRMs is pointless without 3950X.

I wonder if ASRock will ever release an Extreme 6, 7, etc for this generation. Or is that essentially what the Taichi is?

I've been waiting for what turned out to be the 3950X for years now because 1st and 2nd gen Ryzen didn't have enough 1-4 core performance to make me want to upgrade from my i7-6700K.

Huge upgrade from my (now aging) 3570k :)

I plan on buying the 3900X but turning off SMT (as 12 cores is more than enough) -- any idea how that will affect the amount of power used?

My current X370 boards biggest selling point is its dual bios chips with a switch. Due to my ignorance at tweaking memory those chips get used a lot as one is used to unbrick the other. No RMAs.



I paid $175 for it and currently the cheapest board with dual bios chips is $270. $95! Maybe I'll just buy a GPU instead.

Wouldn't one of the boards with a bios flashback function serve the same purpose as the dual bios?

No ideer. I've always had trouble flashing bios before and rarely attempted it. This system is easy to use and reliable.
