I originally started this thread to get some feedback on the Untangle NG Firewall and Router u25w appliance, but have updated with an unboxing and review instead. There's not a lot of data and information out on it, but I decided to go ahead and take the plunge. My gamble is hopefully your gain!

To start off, I had a pieced together MicroATX box, paired with a TP-Link AC1750. The build was getting a bit old and took up a lot of desk space. Also, the amount of wireless devices my household uses has been pared down a bit (from 8-10 average active down to 3-4 average active).

The next posts will cover old system specs/usage, u25w specs/usage/setup, etc, but for now...on to the unboxing!

u25w Unboxing

Great start with the huge FRAGILE sticker. I noticed it was shipped from MBX Systems, which is an OEM network appliance manufacturer.

Lots of bubble wrap.

Tightly packed with a single quick-start guide and warranty info.

Full kit - u25w appliance, 7 ft patch cable, power brick, antenna

It might be a little hard to tell, but the antenna has a slight warp. It seems to work fine though.

The system is fanless, but has a vent on the bottom.

u25w Setup and Configuration

The u25w came pre-installed with Untangle version 11.2.1. I forced an update to 12.0.1. Unfortunately the update failed and left me in a limbo as I couldn't force the update again. I had to perform a fresh install of Untangle via flash drive. My Linux command-line syntax is non-existent, so it took a little bit of time to figure out how to boot to usb device since the u25w doesn't really have a BIOS of sorts.

Other than that hiccup, setup went very smooth. I ran a config back-up from the old system and restored to the new system. Please note that this might not catch every small detail of the system, but it will save a lot of configuration time.

u25w Specs

From Untangle, specs are as follows:
  • Recommended for 25 users
  • Intel Atom® dual core processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 3 x 1 gigabit ethernet ports
  • Dual Band Wireless Router 2.4GHz 5GHz (NOTE: not simultaneous)
  • 32 GB SSD
  • 2 USB ports
  • HDMI port
  • Ships with power adapter, power cord, and ethernet cable
  • Dimensions: 4.9" (W) x 4.7" (D) x 0.76" (H)
  • Signature black case with Untangle green logo and color-coded external/internal ethernet ports.

A few things to point with the above list
  • CPU is Intel Atom Dual-Core E3825 @ 1.33 GHz
  • 2 x USB Ports (1 x 2.0, 1 x 3.0)
  • Ports are not color-coded. Default port config as follows:
    • LAN 1 - External, eth0
    • LAN 2 - Internal, eth1
    • LAN 3 - Internal Gamma, eth2
    • Wireless - Internal Delta, wlan0
    • Console - unused per quick-start guide

Untangle 12.0.1 (Running in router mode behind Mediacom cable modem 50Mb connection)

Installed Apps - Free/Lite Apps
Web Filter Lite
Virus Blocker Lite
Firewall
Ad Blocker
Reports
Intrusion Prevention

No inbound traffic allowed - no port forwarding setup

Static DHCP Device Total - 5
Auto DHCP Device Total - 5
Avg active devices - Avg 3-5

u25w Usage

Reports - 7 day storage

Other than the obvious large spike, load and usage seem very reasonable.

u25w Review

After a couple weeks of use, it's time for a review.

Pros:
  • Extremely small form factor
  • Wireless range manages to meet and exceed the range of my previous router
  • Small power draw
  • Performance

Cons:
  • No wall-mount brackets. However, I did manage to rig up a wall-mount solution.
  • Wireless bandwidth is limited. While my daughter was watching a Youtube video (1080p), my wife's phone internet browser slowed to a crawl. I'm not sure how much traffic it would be able to handle in the 10-25 user environment it is designed for.
  • Shipped with old version, minor upgrade issues

Cost - It can go both ways a bit. Total cost shipped was $435. Researching out builds/parts/etc, I could have come up with something of similar specs for $300-350, but the form factor was a big selling point along with a 1 year warranty.

Overall rating - 8/10
