First thing to do after install is turn off the Windows Firewall that MS will ever-so-helpfully activate for me. I have it off for a reason, not because I'm a clueless person who didn't know how to turn it on...
When I first assembled this PC(last weekend) I installed it, after restart my system was frozen, somehow during the reboot it fried my motherboard trying to run too many processes.
Also I read that the statistics on SP2 are 1 in 10 PCs will be negatively effected by it, the effects can be either system crashes or applications not working. The most common drawback of SP2 is that with the "smart" security features it uses systems resources continually which slows down many computers.
My opinion is the same as IBM, they have released a public announcement stating that SP2 will not be installed on any of their machines.

Well of course, that much is obvious. Software firewalls are programs that are always running, so of course you will lose CPU cycles to them. When I switched from ZoneAlarm to a hardware router, my desktop performance increased noticeably.

That's because they have a lot of in-house developed custom applications that the new security features will render inoperable. To simplify it, just pretend that all of their apps depend on pop-up windows. Naturally, none of those will work correctly anymore without some reconfiguration. It is more complex than that in reality, but it's the same idea.
Update: I should add that I have been on SP2 for two weeks now and have experienced zero problems, none whatsoever. Of course, the very first thing I did after installation was to turn off Windows Firewall, so that no doubt mitigated my problem potential.
I installed it a couple of days ago and so far no problems, I didn't download it from the microsoft site cause I have a puny 56k modem and I hate the auto update thing anyway, it actually came with a games mag PC GAMER (came with the cover disk) I didn't buy it for the SP2, I got home took the cover disk off the mag and there it was hiding sneakerly under the cover disk.

Follow it, it you have a problem in WinXP Pro SP2 LAN connection : (I think)
1. Go to the "Network Connections".
2. Right click on the "Local Area Connection".
3. Uncheck "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity"
Have a nice day
