Hi guys.
I've done some overclocking to my i7 920 (sig rig: White Beauty), and while I was researching OC guides here at OCN, I've noticed that a lot of ya guys here fold with your rigs. I take it that folding at home helps people with PhD's research how proteins fold.

I'll be using my second rig (sig rig: Red Samurai), not powerful with stock everything (speed, cooler). Will it be enough to fold? Or will heat become a problem? I'll probably be folding from 5pm to 11pm every day if I can remember to do that. Mom hates the fan noise of my rigs, so gotta turn my PCs off when I'm not using them (helps with the power bills, tho), so no overnight folding.

And I've seen folding teams if I'm not mistaken. Any teams I can join? Are they location based? Or should I fly solo?

Any other tips are welcome. Thanks.

if you are running the unicore version its all good just as long as you fold and the WU's or Work Units get returned to the server before there deadline they set for them. SMP would get higher points cause of bonus points but you need 10 WUs completed first before they start counting them and they give you a large key that tells the server you are able to receive bonus pts. But SMP WUs usually take 1 day of complete crunch time to finish so unless it had a week deadline unicore would be your best bet not to waste time.

Both of your rigs are capable of pulling off SMP units within deadline. You do not need to run unicore (unless thats what you want). As for cooling if you are OCing and have adequate cooling heat should not be a problem. Just try to stay in the 70s degrees C if on air or otherwise you can setup the client to use less than 100% cpu clocks for folding.

When you are folding SMP WUs the points will be higher if you return units before the preferred deadline. The earlier the more bonus points. As the previous posted said you will need to request a passkey from Stanford and fold 10 WUs with that before the bonus points start rolling in.

Edit: Just noticed you will be foldinfg part time. IF for ~6 hours a day then I think you will be better off folding unicore or non-advanced/small SMPs. If you need guides there are plenty available and good people to help.

Thanks for the replies, guys, but can you explain a bit more in English? Have absolutely no idea what unicore or SMP WU is. A link to a nice guide for total dummies is what I need. Thanks!
