To go along with the .999... =1 thread I thought I'd contribute my own mess. Today I'll prove that 1=2

We have 2 variables A and B where A and B are equals.
A = B
A^2 = AB
A^2 - B^2 = AB-B^2
(A-B)(A+B) = B(A-B)
A+B = B
B+B = B
2B = B
2 = 1

If you know the answer, shhh.....

That just goes to show ya...not all theorems should be in bed at the same time.

EDIT: Actually....
A+B = B
A+B-B=B-B
A=0

highlight to see the answer

and you may want to change A2 to A^2 to avoid confusion

division by zero

between steps 4 and 5 you divide each side by (A-B) which equals zero

old trick

I went to a futher mathematics meeting where they did 0.999 = 1. No one could give a valid reason why it wasn't true. There is a mistake in the 1 = 2 one, but I'm too tired to work it out.

actually. .999999 repeating = 1, but 1!=2 because you divided by A-B wehre A=B, therefore A-B=0, and you can't divide by 0.
and 1=.99999999.... because there is no number between them. between 1 and 2 there is 1.5, 1.25, 1.125 etc, you keep going. but there is nothing between 1 and .99.... therefore they are the same.
