1 OS- multiple chipsets??

I don't know if I'm just slow to learn, or if this is something that is meant to happen.. You all may know this already, or I may just have some unreal luck..

I removed 1 HDD with Vista from an older VIA chipset only to find that it would boot on a newer VIA chipset like it was installed on it in the first place.. I never had this happen before and blew it off as a poorly updated chipset line from VIA.. I made a thread about this last year sometime..

More recently I've had the chance to play around with a few motherboards and found that I can get W7 and Vista to boot from 1 single HDD on just about any system..

Is this an "yes you nuckle head, everyone knows this but you" type of thing, or did I actually find something helpful to share??? Also, shouldn't Windows alert me to re-activate??

windows should alert you to reactivate after changing your motherboard, for sure. i'm currently having issues with my install because i took my 3GHz OC down to stock at 2.66 *sigh*

swaping out single drives and having it boot up somewhere else isn't uncommon, especially on systems that Windows has built in drivers for--older VIA chipsets for example. i would think that with newer chipsets, ones that are 'enthusiast' grade and not business grade, you would have problems relating to this situation.

Actually yes that is the case.. I upped from an older chipset and it booted then restarted.. I figured I'd try and use the OS DVD and select the repair option.. It then asked me if I wanted to restore Vista/W7, I selected yes and everything rebooted just fine.. This was an OS from a P35 to a P45 chipset.. At some point I'll mess around with much older to newer systems..

IDK, I have no doubt that this is something that would have side effects to it.. So far I see none on my main set rig yet.. I'll keep going on it until I do..

It would be nice if one day this could be a reliable way to keep a current OS without doing a full reinstall.. I can't tell you how nice it's been to upgrade and be able to play around with a new motherboard with out waiting hours to set up windows like I want it.. It has saved me around 3-4 hours of installing and setting up drivers, games and software..
