usually if its 1 spot its a specific hardware failure tell him to switch out his comp cables for hdmi... If possible, or vice versa. If he cant or if that doesnt work he will have to wait for a replacement.
Well it would be the wisest decision. If he tries to fix it himself there is no garrentee that it will work. If microsoft does it you'll know it'll be done right, and no warranty loss.
1 Red Light is not covered by the three year warranty.
I love how half the people here are acting like it's going to be solved like the 3 lights get solved. That's not going to work.
E74 is an AV cable error. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in.
Also, the ANA chip may have a problem and will need to be repaired unless it's out of warranty which you're out of luck or do the ANA fix.
1 red light is not the RROD most people get their xboxes fixed for...
visit here to get some idea of what the problem may be.
I just sent my xbox with 3 light RROD last thursday? and it's already on its way back to me.
E74: There is high chance it's a scaler chip problem (the "ANA" or "HANA" chip near the AV cable connection) it can also be caused by a faulty AV cable so check that first. In some cases it is a problem with the GPU and may be repairable by doing the x-clamp replacement (see error 0102)
I'd say best way to find out is to just call xbox up and ask them.
Hold down the eject button and the controller sync button until the read light flashes much faster than usual. Now push either the eject or the sync button (I do not remember which) and record how many red lights you have. Remember, the first number in the code will be when the lights start blinking fast.

May not be covered by 3 year warrenty, but if it still is in 1 year of manufacturer date, it is coverd...
