What is this event all about?

The BOINC Pentathlon is a two week long BOINC team competition. Five different projects will be crunched over the two week period.

The BOINC Pentathlon consists of 5 disciplines:
  1. Obstacle Run (14 days, with bonus credits on 3 one-day obstacles)
  2. Sprint (3 days)
  3. City Run (5 days)
  4. Cross Country (5 days)
  5. Javelin (5x 1 day, only each team's third best daily score counts)

The fun and challenging aspect of the Pentathlon is resource management. The 5 "disciplines" are run over a 14 day period, so each "discipline" overlaps another discipline. Figuring out what to run, and when to run it, is what makes the Pentathlon a unique and challenging BOINC points race.

Announcements and start times will vary for each of the disciplines. This makes managing what projects are running, and when to start and stop running the projects, on of the fun and challenging aspects of the Pentathlon.

Project Choosing Rules
The rules for choosing projects are the same as for last year's Pentathlon.

  • The projects will be chosen by the event organizers
  • Projects from last year's Pentathlon are eligible for this year's Pentathlon
  • There may be more than one GPU project

Prepping rigs now. I think I will just put all my GPUs on numberfields and then switch them to Primegrid after that event ends. IIRC Primegrid PPS give the best PPD, but can have long pending queues, so WW could be better towards the end of the cross country for quicker point returns. I dont have any AMD gpus for Universe but will put a few CPUs on it.
Yep PPS sieve is still the best for points, WW is a close second.
For Universe there are only CPU tasks. There have been a few beta runs of GPU tasks, but so far they have not been able to get a working GPU app up and running.

** I forgot that NumberFields has a GPU app now. Not sure how I'll split things up. 🤔

The system I loaded up with Number Fields is going to run out of CPU work before I can upload it, still have GPU tasks. Does anyone know a blocking URL so I could download some Universe to crunch in the interim? Failing that I can try to set up another client or VM this evening when I have time.

I ran out of tasks on the system I was crunching Universe on also, uploading those now and will try to fill it up again. Don't have any idea when one of the obstacles will occur and don't want to sit idle.
I could only find one IP address for Numberfields, and it is still the same as it was back in '18 when NumberFields was the Marathon project. IP - 129.219.51.76

I had to coax the Uni server to give me more tasks at first, but no issues reloading yesterday or today. :)

This Pent has been a bit crazy for me. I finally finished the build on my new home server, just in time for the Pent to start. This means that I have a mess of rigs sitting around on benches to try and keep my network, file server, meida PC, and lab up and running, since I didn't want to be down for the Pent. While dealing with that mess, I have been finding some random bugs on the latest stable and rc kernels + ROCm 5.1. I might have to just roll with some headless Ubuntu 20.04 installs, to get some additional AMD GPUs up and running.

I'm currently building a new router to go along with my downsized home server, so it has been a bit of an adventure keeping as much gear up and running as possible. Hopefully I can get a few more machines up and running over the weekend. Currently I have a handful of GPUs and a few 2P systems that are not operational.

This is the first time there have been this many disciplines with GPU apps. Until a few years ago, it was actually limited to only one GPU app... The SRBase GPU app is a little nutty, so if you have multiple GPUs, the easiest way to make it play nicely is multiple clients and some cc_config edits.
The CPU app is a real cooker on my Threadrippers, since there is no AVX offset on AMD processors, and SRBase actually puts a higher heat load on my processors than Prime95 small FFTs.

I just realized that I didn't post the link to the individual stats. I didn't break out the Javelin, so that will just be the total for the whole Pent, but the other disciplines should match up to our team totals.

I just need to clean up the Google sheet, and then I'll post the link if you guys are interested. Stats are set to update every hour, except for the times when Google decides to do some random caching of the prior updates, in which case I just have to give the sheet a manual refresh.

-Edit- @franz you are probably best to just keep cranking out the points in PrimeGrid. I didn't have a chance to get any other GPUs on it yesterday, but I hope to get that sorted this evening.

All the GPUs. City Run is [email protected] Looks like I'll be changing up a few things I just switched over. o_O

-Edit- The Einstein server is only spitting out a few tasks at a time. Going to be pretty much impossible at the current rate to load up any kind of a bunker. I do have 500 tasks, but those were just the tasks I had queued up from my usual Einstein crunching that I paused when the Pent started. (n)
