What will be a better buy? An Opteron 165 or a X2 4400+? I'm aiming for a 2.7-2.8GHz OC. My budget is around $200US so don't go recommending more expensive chips or full system upgrades .

Id get whatevers cheaper. My vote goes for the opty because of the high clocks with low volts people have been pulling off.

My MB is very capable of 300HTT+ (DFI what? ) but my RAM caps out at 255MHz if I want to keep decent timmings.

Go with the 165, you can always run your ram at a divider if you neet to. Just hope you get a good stepping CCBBE (though there isnt really a "bad" stepping).

Im in this same debacle here ATM. I have yet to find the 165s under 200, so I assume the opty price cuts havent been introduced everywhere as of yet... and the 4400+ is 220 and shows no signs of dropping in price.

Id say opteron, just because they are amazing (there is like 3-5 threads all over the forums compiling STELLAR opteron OCs, however most are WC. I bet with a good air cooling you could get 2.7-2.8 without too much trouble.

Just make sure, when you DO go to either dual core, make sure your BIOS is updated to ensure compatibility, and make sure you apply the windows Dual Core hotfixes. Also one more thing to note, Dual cores dont have as much affinity to heat as the single cores do, the hottest Ive seen anyone dare to go under full load with an opty is 55C.

They were down in price (165s) but they sold out quick so I'm guessing the retailers are dinging the buyers!

The price cuts were supposed to start 10/30, yes, but many retailers have begun preempting that date, Ive seen 170/175s in a few places for less than 220$.

But Id rather get a 165 for 160-180$

I use to have a 2.0ghz A64 Oc'd to 2.48ghz (248x10) Couldn't get any higher bus speeds. Switched to an Opty 165 because the price dropped. From $385 to $279 cdn. I read that the Opty's could OC very well because they use alot better material than the regular A64 chips do. But anyways i thought...well even if i only get like 400mhz out of the cpu, it's still a Dual Core with more L2 cache!! So i put this bad boy in and i didn't fool around....went to 2.2ghz....2.4ghz....2.6ghz....2.9ghz.... Stock voltage...loaded up windows in 2.9ghz but unstable. Lowered it down to 2.8ghz and no problem....ran a couple of hours in prime95 but crashed...increased the voltage a little no problems....decided to fool around with bus speed....got it now working at 330x8.5!!!!! Pretty sweet from my 248mhz bus speed. Anyways I was EXTREMELY happy! You cannot go wrong with this cpu....i highly recommend it.

Ordered a 165 today... well sort of, because MonarchPC screwed up. Now I just need to actually finish my WC; the parts have been laying in my room for 2 months now.
