So I purchased 4 Corsair Vengence 4gb sticks on sale. I though it was overkill but it was on sale. I was reading a post and someone said that to much ram could be a bad thing. Should I return all 16gb and get a better brand name? Return just 8gb? or keep it? I have a 2600k so if there is a better brand to go with I'll do that instead. Price really isn't an issue but I don't need any fan coolers or anything like that.

I`m don`t know what you use your PC for but i need 16GB.
If you only surf the web and play minesweeper it is an overkill.

My RAM gets eaten up by After Effects (CS4) bot all Adobe products likeRAM so keep it and like said:

Edit: With my mobo i shouldn`t even be able to go over ~420Mhz FSB and i go to 441 so no problem for me ...
Edit2: And got the RAM o.c. to 1456 instead of 1333MHz (which is not that impressiv but still an o.c.)

Then 16GB is not overkill. CS5 and and video editing use a lot of ram. Although if you plan to overclock, that much ram puts alot of strain on the memory controller so you will need more voltage toward it than normal. Other than that shouldn't hurt anything.

You can't really get much better than those corsair kits tbh - corsair are a reputable manufacturer.

As for whether you need 16gb - if you do indeed do heavy (long sd or hd) video editing, then great - if you run concurrent VMs all the time, great.

If neither of the above, then yeah it's too much for your needs. To be honest the extra stress on the IMC isn't worth worrying about - you may have to slack off timings a little but that's about it.

If you have 16gb of ram, any decent software (browsers included) will use it to maximum effect anyway - only really old applications that use ram inefficiently would benefit from a ramdisk, and I would not recommend it.

As for common apps, windows creates a cache of them in spare ram anyway, so having a ~7gb ramdisk sat there with static data on it makes little sense.
