760 square feet.

It's just not very conducive to a large 5.1 system. It's also a condo rental, so cable routing is an issue.

That being said I'm very interested in tossing together a 2.1 (or 3.1) system with nothing but front speakers. No need for surround, and I can't handle the cables as I would have to buy another area rug or something of the sort to cover up the wires.

What should I be looking for? Models, brands, specifications, etc.

Price is the biggest issue, I'm looking used exclusively, and thus Craigslist is what I'm scouring on a daily basis. I'd say less than $500 is the goal for a receiver, 2 front channels, and a sub. If a center front would help or be worth it, I'm open to that as well.

Any high end stereo shops nearby?
They usually cary some used equipment, and will offer a warranty too.

I've bought a few things here (Audio Consultants, Evanston, Il.) for example, and have been very satisfied.

And if you don't need radio, an integrated amp will do nicely.

Haha, I actually live in the Gold Coast in downtown Chicago, so yeah, I suppose there's a few high end shops nearby like this place called Audio Consultants in Evanston I heard about on here...
