So the Holidays are coming up and I want to build my mother a nice pc. Usually I don't limit myself with a budget($700 this time). But this isn't the only gift I'm working on. My mother does not play games so I am not worried about bottlenecking the GPUs. Just want a strong enough CPU so she can do w/e mothers do. I can't decide if the AMD which is $40 less is worth the $40 price drop. I have never ran and AMD CPU before. Also if you have any ideas how to make the build cheaper without loosing quality pleas let me know.

Intel Set-up
CPU - i5-750 - $199.99
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 - $104-99

AMD Set-up
Phenom II 955 - 171.99
Mobo - GIGABYTE GA-MA785GMT-UD2H AM3 - 89.99

Rest of the Build:
Memory - G.SKILL 4GB DDR3 - 94.99
Graphics - SAPPHIRE HDMI Radeon HD 4650 1GB - $54.99
PSU - Corsair 450W - 64.99
HD - Seagate Barracuda 500gig - 54.99
Case - LIAN LI PC-V351B Black Aluminum MicroATX - 99.88

Intel Total = 703.81
AMD Total = 660.81

system will be air cooled.

And not big on changing the case.

im going to say AMD cause its more value for the money
you can't really go wrong either way

Try get a 4830 instead of that 4670 1gb.
In my opinion, it really matters on how much you spend. Like DaMirrorLink said, you can't go wrong either way. Having used both Intel and AMD (both on Gigabyte boards) I must say I prefer Intel - but purely for how consistently they perform and overclock. Seeing as your mother won't be overclocking or gaming, I suggest picking which ever one you want to buy (if you want to splash out a bit of extra cash, go Intel; otherwise go AMD).

Either way, good luck with your build and I hope your mum likes it

Pretty set on the graphics card. Mother won't use it for anything more then watching some movies.

2 parts in not sure about are the mobos and the RAM.

looking at my current amd board. without o/c it takes up to 1666 ddr3. seeing as they don't sell 1666 ram. I found a good batch of g.skill. higher latency of coarse.

Oh sorry didnt read the mother bit. just looked at the specs and price range.

Sorry.

Also if you are paying go for amd.
Those are both pretty awesome processors for a mother that wont be gaming much. Surfing the web and common day to day tasks dont really need that much power.

You can consider going for the AMD PhII 720 tri core for $125 free shipping, that would lower the price of the AMD build and ill bet your mother wont notice the difference.

If you are set on the quads then i would still go the phenom II route.

Go with the AMD....but I would grab a 790GX board though.

I had thought about it at first as well. But I want something that will last here a good while. Also something she can run office, itunes, windows movie maker and w/e other programs that makes her current P4 computer crash in an instant. Going for a strong multitasking cpu. and what better then one of amd's top. I was thinking if I skimmed on my family members present budget, might end up getting her the 965 BE.

I'm an enthusiast. Can't help myself

Any Suggestions? I'm only seeing 790 boards from biostar, jetway, asrock. Never tried any boards from those makers nor have I heard any good things.

And now stuck with another choice
HD
WD Caviar Green 32mb cache 5400 RPM
vs
Seagate Barracuda 16mb cache 7200 RPM

Go with the Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-UD3H

Combo Deal above for $269.98

I'd give that board my top marks above all the other AM3 790GX motherboards.

Go with the Seagate unless this HDD is only going to be used for storage. The only thing I can forsee being a problem is that case. Any chance you're willing to go for something a little bigger. The Antec 300 is only $45 with free shipping at Amazon and will give you more room at half the price and you can use that $50 to maybe upgrade your GPU to a 4850 or upgrade your RAM to the DDR3 1600 G. MY whole Idea is to build a micro atx set-up.

I have switched to this case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129041

I am though considering the 955 CPU instead. And

I had also changed my mind about the RAM and switched to
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193

Though. I might go with a faster latency.

This computer will not be used for gaming. Just your average video editing and photoshop fun by my mother. A higher end GPU is not needed. Nor extra expansion slots. Just cpu and RAM power. with a strong micro atx board.

i like AMD but frankly i find this not to be the case.

it's $40 more, for turboboost, lower power consumption, and faster IPC.

whever it comes to hard drives, spin speed is always better than cache size.

5400 rpm drives are typically shipped on laptops.
