2 or 3 Pentium II motherboards + CPU

569 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  superk
I have 2 or 3 pentium II systems, and I really need space. I have been reluctant so far to throw them out, but as time goes on I consider it more and more often.. can these serve any practical use, or should I just throw them away? Is there anybody out there who would use them even if I made a freebie? Would they even be worth the cost of shipping!?

All the boards I have work, the CPUs work, the drives I will be keeping, so basically im just referring to the board, cpu, and PSU possibly.. If someone wants these post here or PM me. I will throw them away in 48 hours, as I am in the middle of my twice annual computer server room overhaul, and this stuff has to go. Yours for the price of shipping to wherever you are. Quotes available upon request. No pics available, sorry, but everything was working when pulled.

Churches are good places for donating older PCs. They will know who can use one, even if it's just for word processing/email. Just be sure it's working properly and has all the disks and manuals. You don't want to give someone who doesn't know much, or anything, for that matter, about PCs a big problem.

Find out if your local High School has a computer club or something similar. They often take old/used components. I remember donating some old stuff to my local High School (the one I went to). They were glad to take it off my hands.
Pick up two PCI network cards (gigabit or wireless, however you need) and a PCI SATA controller and you've got yourself a server for your home. Home servers really don't need any more power than a P-II.

Thats a good idea, but they arent full towers, nor do they have all components (missing are ram, hdd, cdrom, case... I have PSU but prefer to keep). Very good idea though, and quite noble, +1 for that.

I already have 3 home servers, which are the reason these ones are no longer in service... e6600, x2-4200+, and a 2700+ which isnt even really in use actually, its ready to be decomissioned soon too... this isnt to mention my 2 personal use computers, my wifes laptop, or the HTPC... its all too much at once, I used to run 11 computers here, and invested some money in higher performance equipment to decomission the lower-end units and save space and hydro (even though the landlord pays hydro, someone gets a break)

if you don't mind me asking, what the hell do you use 3 home servers for? lol

I mean, I have one and it does everything - dns, active directory, file server, backup, VPN, print, etc for my PC, girl's PC, HTPC, and laptop.... and its running a VM for a second domain controller for my basement lan (4 PCs, soon to be diskless and PXE booting from it too!).
that perks my interest. i dont have a home server yet. how much would it cost to make one?

If you are asking on a shipping price for my parts, please PM me your postal/zip code. If you are requesting information on Manyak's post, either start a thread, or PM him if you have permission... dont clutter my thread please.
