either card will do, but if you want to save some cash the 4890 will be a better deal. as far as i know, from recent reviews it seems that the 4890 will perform the same as an overclocked gtx285.

hope this helps

GTX285 = HD4890 at Stock

GTX285 over clocked > stock HD4890

GTX285 stock clocks < HD4890 overclocked

GTX285 overclocked >/=/< HD4890 overclocked

The GTX 285 for performance. The 4890 for price/performance. Personally, I would go with the 4890 simply because getting more bang for your buck is very satisfying.

On that note I'd mention that Blizzard loves optimizing for nvidia cards. (If I remember correctly they actually had a major content patch for WoW before Wrath that was dedicated in part to nvidia optimization...)

Granted for D3 and SC, either will do you more than well enough. Hell, a GTX 260 will handle either game like a champ too. If you're looking to save some cash up front I'd pick up a GTX 260, and when the 300 series cards come out pick up a second GTX 260 when the price drops and go SLI.

I played crysis on a 4870x2/48701gb tri fire and it outperformed my 9800GTX Tri. Id say ATI does crysis just as good as nvidia these days. But that games old

What?

GTX 285 > 4890 stock
GTX 285 >/= 4890 overclocked

With the price drops ATI cards are a lot more affordable and they will perform more than enough in those games. I have a 4870 and it is more than enough for me, I play mostly UT3.

The 4890 is a better bang for the buck, though the 285 is quite a bit faster, IMO it doesn't justify the pretty big price increase.

GTX 285 is slightly faster then stock HD 4890 but once you look at 1Ghz HD 4890s and the 710core GTX 285s the difference in games is negligeable.

Unless someone like Evga or BFG begin selling 285s with ultra beefed up PWMs/ solid caps so the cards can hit 800core+ easy GTX 285 1Gb is a really stupid buy right now.

To clear things up:

GTX 275 stock = HD 4890 stock < GTX 285 stock
GTX 275 OC = HD 4890 OC = GTX 285 stock
GTX 275 OC = HD 4890 OC < GTX 285 OC

GTX 285 is faster. HD 4890 is a way better deal. Get the HD 4890.

The GTX 285 is a bit faster, even when both are OCed, but the 4890 is definately a better deal at commonly available prices.

4890 OC 1Ghz/4.4Ghz will beat a stock GTX285 and will beat a Oced GTx285 is 50% of the games. Also Blizzard games will support ATI cards.
