2x 30gb SSD *questions*

1420 Views 31 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  gonX
Just ordered them yesterday on newegg. They are the OCZ Vertex ones. These are my first SSDs so I some questions about how i should go about installing them. What are the first things i should do? I was going to see about putting them RAID0 also. Any help would be awesome. Thanks.

Same thing as a normal HDD.... You still need SATA connectors and all that good stuff.

This guide tells you how to set up RAID 0

From what I've heard, TRIM doesn't work in RAID. I ordered the same drives also.

This will help tweak windows for SSD use:

thanks abunch. As for gaming, do these really make big performance difference? Any more feedback would be appreciated.
I would say you need to go to the "OCZ Forum"

And if you pickup any tips, come back and tell us

Games do run better

NFS Shift runs smoother from my SSD's and so does Crysis!

the real big difference...is for a boot drive...your games will load super fast...even when you open 10 apps at once...thats really the only noticeable difference.

the vertex is a solid series of SSD...not as good as the intel made ones...but close.

install them just like any other raid setup.
You're going to want to update the firmware. If its a new drive so its firmware should be decent but there are still some older ones on the market so you never really know. Mine shipped with the original firmware long after it had been updated 3 or 4 times. Makes a pretty big diffrence in terms of performance (and most of the support software like wiper.exe will not work properly with old firmware versions). You'll need to make yourself a bootable flash drive with the firmware updater on it. Details are indeed on the OCZ forum though i have to say I;m not a big fan of how disorginized that forum is. Good luck and good choice!

Alright i have them installed but i can't seem to load my windows 7 disk up.
I hooked up the ssds to my computer and got the raid0 setup with them. now when i put my windows 7 disk in to install it doesn't ask to boot from disk. Any ideas?
bios

change boot order.
Put your CD/DVD drive first

during install, it will ask you if you need to install third party scsi/raid drivers, select yes and put in your driver disk or USB drive with the driver on it -> install

now it's all just like a normal drive install

Enjoy the performance!
Well i'm in windows 7. Not very sure if these are the results i should be getting. Attachment 131526 I still very confused about what i'm suppose to do. I'm not sure where to find my firmware version.

o_O hmm... my max read speed is around 350-400? i believe weird, yours is only at 230.. anyways um. if you look in you bios and look at your hard drive listing is says something like "vertex drive v1.10" something like that, which the 1.10 is your firmware
I didn't see that in my bios..
this is very upsetting.

hmm purhaps during post? when its detecting your drives? i bet its most likely 1.3 or later. mine came with 1.10 and 2 months later 1.3 came out

Edit: I read somwhere that if you go to device manage you can look up your SSD there too.. read that on some forum

go into the device manager, right click on the drive, properties

In properties go to one of the tabs. Forgot what one it is, but it's a drop down menu with a list window on the left of it.
Go through those options in the drop down
You should be able to find "Version info" in there

Sry I dont know what the option is off hand and I'm running win2k at work.
