Why would you buy you knowingly buy not one but two vid cards with 1gb vram these days (5870)?

Can instead I say get a 6970 or a 6950 if ya wanna save money? The 570 is a good card, but given its weakness with vrms, I can't recommend them at all.

Some games use a lot more than 1gb at 1080p. The other obvious thing is why buy into a limitation when you don't have to?

Do your bro a solid and get him something that won't blow up or pigeon hole him by being vram choked.

Well, two 5870 in crossfire is faster than a 5890 if you want to look at some benchmarks for comparison. The 5870 combo will walk all over the single 570 in a lot of games when you see good crossfire scaling but there are the pit falls of crossfire.

You are going to need to elaborate more to back up those claims.

One 570 vs two 5870 or two of each? I would go for two 570s over two 5870 or two 5870s over one 570. However it is dependent on eyefinity, folding, and which main games you play. For example, I have three screens and would need ati eyefinity but need the folding power of nvidia cards.

I'm expecting BF3 to be better on the Nvidia probably? Gonna be used on one screen.

One card is always better than two if they're even close in performance.

This is true. Although 2 5870s will smoke 1 570.

For a single monitor at that resolution I wouldn't bother getting 2 GPU's.

Just pick up a single 5870 and you bother should be good to go.
If he feels the need for more power you can always pick up another 5870/5970 later on for more power.

I would avoid the GTX 570 since it just seems overpriced for the quality and performance that you get when compared to other cards.

Dude 2x5870 is lightning!! If it is the same price as a 570 there is no question. Price for price the 5870 dominates! With 1 monitor both are overkill but why pay the same amount for less performance??

Edit: As long as you have ample headroom for heat and power of course. If so 2x5870 all the way in this case. Also don't worry about VRAM with 1 monitor 1080p, 1 GB is good enough there are plenty of reviews out there that back that up.

I also agree with @Jaguarbamf, 1 5870 is good enough for your situation, spend the rest on other upgrades!

price and performance wise 2x5870 is the better choice, I recently just bought a 2nd 5870 for $150.

I have the same thoughts about Bf3 being better on Nvidia. The frostbite engine on Bad Co ran better on Nvidia then ATI out of the box. Remember the load time issues and mounted gun problems?

Im torn between the 570 or the 6970, both MSI cards.

what to do ohhhhh what to do.

OP, single card is always more desirable.
