2x GTS 250 (512MB) SC vs. GTX 285 (2GB)?

my question is whether or not it is worth it to upgrade? i am currently running two evga gts 512mb 250 superclock gpu's in sli and find them lacking in the more detail oriented games i play (cod mw2, batman aa, crysis, lfd). by that i mean i can't turn on all the eye candy and have the games run without hiccups along the way. since getting one of the newer ati cards isn't going to happen anytime soon due to demand, i have been considering going with an evga gtx 2gb 285. i would eventually get another to go sli. are the newer gtx 285's a good upgrade, or should i wait for an ati card, or should i wait for nvidia's new tech, or maybe a different nvidia card available now?

my cards currently run at 770 core clock, 1890 shader clock, 1123 mem clock stable. get a 7.5 in wei graphics/gaming graphics for windows 7 home premium 64-bit.

and ram is getting upgraded very soon.

with one gtx 285 you will find that it is slower by a bit than your current rig. however by no means is your rig not able to play any of the current games.

i would wait a bit longer for fermi to come out wait for prices to drop and then make a choice.... i know your itching to upgrade, but making the decision right now isnt the best financial choice
WEI means nothing, just like most synthetic benchmarks.

Have a look at the review of ATI' 5970. It clearly is the fastest graphics card to date, however, it retails at $700. I'd wait till January for nVidia' GTX3xx cards and see what they offer. There's no point spending an inordinate amount of money now when, for the same price you can get DX11 hardware.
I play all of these games fine with just one GTS250. If you want to upgrade, i would get some ATI, or wait for the Fermi chips to come out. Really, only a gtx295 would be worth it, but they cost waaay to much IMO.

The hiccup he mentions are probably the cause of too low VRAM, the GTX285 will definatly sent him ahead. I had 2 x 9800GTX+ in SLI and I know what he means
.

@ OP, the best option for you would be either HD5850 > or wait for fermi
.

I agree with blade.
Your best upgrade for right now, would be to at least get a 5850.
They are slightly above the GTX 285 performance and they support DX11.
Either that or stick with what you got and wait till Q1 2010 for Fermi. Then for one, you will have more options to choose from and two, ATI's prices will go down.

Your games are running fine because of the size of your display. I'm currently running SLI w/9800gtx 1gb gpu's on a 17" display and the frame rates & eye candy are superb. He's running on a 22" display and that resolution, the frame rates are decent along with the eye candy but having at least an ATI 5850 will give him the ability to run at that resolution along with better eyecandy.

psi_guy, upgrading to a GTX285 will not set you far beyond what you're currently running. The memory from the GTX285 will make things a little better but not enough for the price of upgrading. Be patient and wait for the Fermi gpu's if you're a Nvidia fan. If it does not matter, you're better off upgrading to at least an ATI 5850.

I totally agree. Upgrading to a single gtx285 wouldn't make much a difference. I say wait for prices to ease down or fermi.

again, thanks for the continued insight into my gpu upgrade dilemma, i greatly appreciate it. unfortunately for me, i am a nvidia fanboy (ever since ati's started having game compatibility issues). also, since the 58 and 59 series cards are almost impossible to obtain at the moment, i think i will be sticking with what i have for now until next year. i am looking at a very hefty tax return ($2500+) and will have plenty of options then.

i kind of doubt it will fix my problem, but i am hoping that upping my ram to 6gb 2000mhz will help with the games being choppy here and there. if nothing else, it will definately help me get my cpu up to and over the 4ghz mark.

I know, but if you have 2 of them with each 512, you have 1gb of total memory which is fine for higher res.

It's seriously not worth it. I know for a fact your system can run MW2 Maxed out with at least 2X AA, and max out Batman AA (Not sure about PhysX), and do Very High in Crysis at a decent Resolution. I know this because my 8800GTS can max out MW2 with 2X AA, same for Batman AA, the only game it struggles in is Crysis. If a 8800GTS G92 can run these games then you can for sure.

This is not true:

When I configure two graphics cards in SLI mode, do the graphics cards work together to create double the memory size?

No. In SLI mode, each graphics card uses its own frame buffer memory to render a 3D application. The operating system will report a graphics card frame buffer memory size that is found on a single graphics board.
