2x2GB Mushkin Ascent overclocking?

Hey OCNers~

I have a question regarding the RAM that I have in my sig rig, hopefully someone has them or can offer me some advice as to what I might be doing wrong.

I have this set of Mushkin Ascents, found here.

Overall, I like the RAM, but they sure seem to be bad overclockers. Before I bought them, I read up on them and they seemed to have pretty decent overclocking ability, and stability.

After quite a bit of messing around with them, I have a feeling that I may be doing something wrong, or that I fell victim to what I have heard about other memory companies, selling 800MHz RAM that has shown the ability to overclock to 1066MHz as 1066MHz memory(I have read of a few OCZ modules that are sold like this).

When I first got the memory and put it into my system, it automatically registered as 800MHz, and I manually adjusted them to 5-5-5-15 2T timings at 1066MHz, which I have read is fairly normal for many boards out there to do this.

I have tried so many different combinations of voltage and timings, and even with like a 20-30MHz OC, I get blue screens. I used Memtest to check out the RAM, and they reported no errors at 5-5-5-15 2T @ 1066MHz.

So..what, if anything could I possibly be doing wrong? +rep for good info.

Loosen the timings and you should be able to get higher clocks. Try 7-7-7-20 which should hopefully give you some OCn space.

Does having loose timings like that degrade performance of the memory at all?

yes, but it's dismissible (by .2 frames or something) at the same speed.

Awesome, I will give that a try when I get home then and see what kind of results I get! +reps!

When you were overclocking your cpu to 3.9GHz and raising the FSB, was the ram on 800MHz, or 1066MHz? What memory ratio is it on? 1:1? Post a snap of CPU-Z, both cpu and memory.
780i's have ram problems...... trust me, i kno how bad it can be....... dont expect to get any higher..

I will do that when I get home. I tried 1:1, but on this board the FSB that you put in is quad pumped, so with a 1:1 ratio it would set my RAM to 1300MHz, and would not post at that speed. So I have been running it unlinked, with the RAM set manually to 1066MHz, which, if I remember right set my divider to 8:13.

Actually, I just realized that I had a snap in photobucket, so here it is:

Part of what had me worried about my RAM is that CPU-Z reports my RAM as being 800MHz memory, and that I had it overclocked to 1066MHz.

Well, originally I had pretty good luck with overclocking RAM on it. I had some 800MHz OCZ memory in it (4x2GB) and they held a stable OC at 960MHz, so I was hoping to get similar with 1066Mhz, and at least get to like 1150MHz stable, but no go so far.

For all practical purposes you are running @1066Mhz.

my ram will do 1200+mhz on a p45, but on my 780 it is random,i think i have stability, but it changes. it is stupid..... i want to oc like mad,i had them at 1100MHZ 5-5-5-12 @ 1.8V now i cant even hit 1100...

Not really sure what you are getting at here. I bought the RAM because it was rated at 1066MHz, and I am having an issue with even the slightest overclock, which for an $80 set of memory seems a little bit ridiculous to me, honestly.

It's the 780i that is causing it to be read as 800 MHz DDR2 instead of 1066MHz. I discovered this by accident while researching for my board, as I do not have 1066MHz in mine.

Yea, I have read about this too. It almost had me buying a board with an Intel chipset in it, but sadly with too much money invested in GTX 280 SLI and no Intel chipset boards giving the option of SLI, that idea kinda fell through sadly.

Strange. It seems totally random to me, because with some 1066MHz Kingston HyperX that I had in my HTPC, CPU-Z read it as 1066MHz in my board. I am starting to doubt Nvidia based chipsets on the whole.

Yea, I just can't figure out why there is not a board out there yet for LGA775 with an Intel chipset that supports SLI.

nFarce 780i.

Nothing more needs to be said.

Except for the fact you are needlessly worrying over why your RAM was set to 800 by default.

Please familiarize yourself with SPD.

Manufacturers set their RAM to be able to POST in every board out there with only 1.8v.

THIS IS NORMAL!
Those sticks should hit 1100 MHz without issue (see my sig). Download Memset: http://www.tweakers.fr/memset.html
Send us a screenie of it so we can see your subtimings as well. AQlso, what voltage are you running?
