3 GPU's, 2 folding and one for general use

i just picked up 2 more 8800GTS(G92) cards that ill be using for folding. (thanks Greg121986) I have 2 already. one folds 24/7 in my htpc an the other one is in my sig rig, i fold on that whenever im not gaming.

My question is, can i use 2 8800GTS(G92)'s to fold 24/7 on and then have a third card (9600GT superclocked) to use for gaming? I know when you try to fold w/ different cards they dont play well together, but the 3 card wont be doing any folding. Will that work?

Here is what im working w/ (less the SLI connector). There is a sound card in there. there is one open pci-x slot open for a graphics card.

sry for the big asz pic

You can fold with an card, in any configuration, as long as they're all ATI or Nvidia cards on the same machine because obviously ATI and Nvidia drivers don't get along. Unless something changed recently...

You just can't use SLI when you're folding...but it seems you already got that

Yeah, that will work. Right now I have 2 9600gso's folding in my rig, when I want to play a game I just close the client on the gpu connected to my monitor and leave the second client running with no issues, whereas when I just had the one card my computer would lock up when I launched a game without closing the gpu client.

thats what i want to get around. The 9600 GT doesent fold all that well, so it wont be folding. I want to prevent having to shut down clients while im gaming.

anyone else?
I've been wondering something similiar too, I know if you mix cards with different amounts of shaders it can kill the PPD of the card with more shaders yeah?

Anyway, the main game I play is not very demanding, so if I was to pick up an 8800GS and have that as my primary card for gaming and fold on the GTX 260, would that effect my PPD at all?

sorry for the thread jack btw

This is about it

No SLI on the cards that fold, just make sure you uninstall drivers->install card->install drivers to prevent any problems, and crunch away!!

not a problem. hopefully we will both get a good answer.

let me restate
Graphics/display will ONLY be run on the 9600GT

After setup the 2 8800GTS' will ONLY be used for folding.

I want to maximize my ppd w/o having to shut down a client to play a game.

I fold 2 gpus that are different and I don't seem to have any problems with my PPD. although one card is a much better folder. I can pull around 6000PPD on my 9800GTX with a good WU. But the 8800gt rarely breaks 3500. I don't think it affects the shader clock because you can OC them independently.
I use 2 monitors and I have to turn off one card for gaming or playing movies. That is normal.

I didn't notice any ppd drop while gaming on one card and folding simultaneously on the other.

You have two indentical cards though yeah? I was wondering if mixing two different cards would hurt the folding performance of my 260

hey stinger,
i'm assuming you have a 3 pcie mobo. you can do as you've stated. use the 9600GT as your display or general use card and use the two others as folders. just gotta put the 96GT in the top pcie. when you set it up though, remember to use the flags -gpu 1 and -gpu2. since you are using the last two and not your first one. you can dl my folder from my guide in my sig. just delete the first folder w/o a number and the last folder with a 3. that leaves you with 1 and 2.

DD, if your 88GT isn't breaking 3.5K even on 353s.. then i would assume its taking a hit b/c of the mixing of cards with your GTX

i do have a 3 pcie mobo. does the 96GT have to be in the top slot? I wont be able to use my soundcard if i put a 88GTS in the middle slot.

you can try to use the middle slot for it and see if it works. thats something that i'm not too sure about. when tried to use the second slot on my mobo.. it was a no go.. it might be different for you?
ill give it a shot
If it blackscreens: Just boot on one of the 88's for one time, then in windhoze set primary screen to the 9600. then reboot. Voila. Youll probably get a black screen until in windows though!
Fixed my issue with primary screen on PCI-E X1 this way.
