6xxx CF has better value/performance over the 5xxx series. If you want crossfire under $300, you can get two cheap 6850s for exactly that amount.

The other one is x8; don't worry, it's been proven that cards don't utilize the full potential of the x16, so your only losing less than 5% by having a x16 with an x8. Consider 2x6850.

May I also say that I personally think the 6870 is garbage; I've got one, and I'm selling it. They run way to hot and loud, and they are only 5% away in performance from my DEAD silent MSI R6850... not to mention that I can overclock it +25%, while my reference 6870 doesn't want to stay above 7%.
EDIT 2: May I also add that 2x6850s dominate the 5970, meaning around +40% performance increase over the 6950/70 and the 570.
But crossfire really depends at what resolution you are playing at. If you are under 1080p; I would say don't bother.
And if you like BFBC2, I would also not get crossfire. Strange flickering all the time with DX10/11, DX9 doesn't have it, but I have no-AA on DX9 mode.
