why? what's wrong with your setup? you just need to sell those gpus and get something more updated like a gtx285.

or sell your cpu and get a q9550. get yourself another stick of ram so you can run dual channel.
amd, since their mobo/cpu are cheaper
300$ Won't get you a good enough upgrade from what you currently have.

Save up more, and get a Phenom II or something
Its not an upgrade guys i will be upgrading to sli 285 and i7 and stuff but this is for my little bro who wants to play gta san andreas and nfs undercover and i wanted to hook him up with something in the summer. I have already got hard drive, 1440x900 19" monitor and dvd burner for him. But i have to buy everything else including case and psu.

Grrr... you are pushing it with the case and psu. The min req for GTA is a Tricore. And that 9800GT is comming out for 70$ with a free game, not to mention that the 9800GT is also starting to show its age. If you can get a sub 100$ Intel motherboard that can take the E5200 far, then I dont see this working with a case and psu. Too low man. Sell something. Work with us.

AMD is cheaper now days... Intel kicks their ass as far as performance but the core i7 doesn't really apply to a $300 build

Look at the bench marks posted. AMD is competative against everything except the i7, which is QUIIIICKK!!!

Aye, and like I said the i7 doesn't really apply to this build, however at just about every level the amd variants appear to be slightly cheaper and slower in real-world use. Their cost/performance ratio is very similar, amd is just taking the more budget friendly approach it seams while intel is comfortable with pushing the performance envelope and depending on its reborn reputation to validate it's price tags.

I can put together a pretty badarse build w/ case and PSU for ~ $350 :/

W/o case and PSU It's right in your price range.

Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147114

Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813186141

GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102822

PSU(Other suggestions might be better): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171031

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231122

CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103300

Kuma is Phenom I dual-core. Can OC well and has performance roughly on par w/ C2Ds

edit: better mobo/CPU combo if you can get a case and psu elsewhere or increase you budget

Add in the OS.... and you have about $200 to work with....

9600GSO = $45
AMD X2 + mobo = $90
PSU = $30
Beige Case from local PC shop = $10
2x1GB DDR2 = $20

so what are you gonna do with the cpu, mobo, gpu and ram when you upgrade? since going to i7 will require you new components of those stuff.

I've already lined up sales for everything that i wont need. This $300 or so pc is just something i wanna get for my little bro so he can play gta san andreas and some other games that he loves to play. His step dad bought him this useless emachine that cant play one game at the monitor's 1440x900 resolution.

right. so it's definately gonna be an amd rig.
cpu $124

mobo $95
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813138140
ram $36
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231207
cast+psu $50

the onboard gpu is more than enough to max gtasa, especially since that cpu is best for gaming (and we all know how well it performs against the fastest duos and quads). you can also oc the igp to get better performance. he can also add a gpu like a 4830 in case he wants to try the newest games and max them out on that reso, just make sure to change the psu.

cheers now

Desert rat has a good build but you could save a few bucks with a cheaper case. What is the grafixs requirements for the games. Can you run a 8500 gt or something. You could save more if you can run a cheaper GPU.My buddy just went from his 8500 gt which he played Cod4,farcry2 and Cod5 with for a 260.The 8500 gt run the games just fine just not at a high resolution.
i just did a e6600/9800gt rig for $360 shipped

i say just get 1 more stick of ram so u can have 4 sticks and run dual channel. You need nothing else.
i just built a second computer for myself. e5200 cpu, gigabyte g31m-es2l board, 2x1gb corsair pc800, and a 9600gt used here. its a very nice oc system. i think it was less then $300.
