after some more detail...
Cant figure out how to smooth out the button. My mesh isnt exactly organized... so mesh smooth really destroys it. Any ideas?

lol sorryy... I tend to forget about the vintage XBOX
You need to set the smoothing groups. If it still just makes a mess w/ m.s. or equivalent (not sure what app. you're using here) then unfortunately, you just need to make a cleaner mesh.

edit: Oh yeah, & lol @ "vintage".

Atari is vintage.

lol maybe origonal xbox is next : ). I just discovered Graphite modeling tools. After I made the orrigonal mesh.
. I had used a boolean before to get the ring indent... I didnt notice i was using a low poly sphere. oh well... Teaching yourself has its downsides... either way its cool

Don't worry about it. On something this simple, the graphite tools wouldn't have saved you a whole lot of time anyway.

Using a low poly sphere is fine, & the way you should do it. Uneccessary polygons are uneccessary.

You just have to set the smoothing groups &/or put in some chamfers prior to using sub'd / turbosmooth.

If you wanted to get really crafty, you can make that indent from a normal map, in fact, that's an ideal situation for normal mapping.

nice work man.. keep it up! teaching yourself is imho the way to go.. i mean mess around with different things.. and you can find a butt-load of free tutorials online! i'm currently doin a degree in in games design majoring in 3d and level design.. and i guess it's helped, obviously in theory but most things i've learnt at home in my own time. if you need any help or want any advice drop me a line sometime.

take care
