I've seen little actual performance data on the effect ram has on gaming. Since I have RAM that overclocks well I thought I would do some tests to find out if the "1600MHz CL9" standard is really all you need for gaming. I tried to keep everything else the same by keeping my 3930k at 3.6Ghz, using a single GTX 780 and locking it to 1006MHz. For the timing tests I ran at 1600Mhz and for the speed tests I used 11-11-11-28.
I'm going to look into this data later today but I thought some would like to see it, so here it is!
Yeah it definitely shows that below 1600MHz you see a significant drop and even with the diminishing returns going past 1600 is worth raising the timings up a little past CL9.
