my friend wants to upgrade to a 4650 and wants to know if its worth it (temp card) he has an 8600gts will he see an improvement in FPS at all? his monitor only does 1024x768 max

Yeah the HD4650 is a good bit better. I'd say that's a good card for low res.

Not much of an upgrade at the resolution he's playing at. Both cards are pretty much equal.

Yeah HD4650 is a lot more powerful. It has 320SP last i check and what 8600 has as competition was HD2600 with 120SP.

i assume your friend got an old pc which uses cheap psu, the best card he should get is 4670 gddr3 but it may be subject of availabily. 5570 or 5670 is an option too but at that resolution 4670 is enough

they're around same level and he prob won't be getting enough upgrade to increase graphics quality. maybe 10-15 fps increase

Best thing to do would be buy a 8800 GT s/h.
Bloody cheap and would kill those 2 cards for next to nothing, Especially at that res.

not 8600 GT but 8600 GTS.... with the !S! 8600 GTS kick 4650. many people tend to misread or intentionally misread. sometimes when people say 8600 GTS and some people think they say 8600 GT and sometimes people just say i got X1900..... X1900 what? they dont say the XT? XTX? pro? or what.

it dont matter if a card is folds genderations ahead then x card. it matter of individual card. new card can be faster then old card but old card can also be faster than new card.

X1950 XTX is ten folds faster than 4650

8600 GT is slower than 4650 by 4%

8600 GTS is faster than 4650 by 19%

8600 GTS is slower than 4670 by 14%

4650 is slower than 4670 by 39%

4650 is weak.

8600 GTS is faster than 4650.

who made that list? thats some un-accuracy piece of list. its riddiculous putting X850XT PE below 4350! 3650! ect... OMG!

i own X850 XT non PE and still installed on one of my multiple pc's and it is super fast. it plays FarCry 1 on max setting nicely than my niece's pc with 4350 slideshow gameplay.

X850 XT and PE is around X1800 XL speed (not feature)

three GTX 480 tri sli is faster than 5870X2 by 7%........ oopz i mena scratch that, three GTX 480 in tri sli is faster than 5870X2 by 29%!

to answer OP question...... going from 8600 GTS to 4650 is a DOWNGRADE. you are committing 13 frame decrease.

4650 is not probly be faster than 3850..... gosh! its just not faster! 4650 is a whole lot slower than 3850! not even in the same league! 3850 is 200x faster than 4650. newer card dont mean a thing if it suck. and 4650 is not above 8600 GTS. 8600 GTS is faster than 4650 by 19%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

phenom 965, 8gb ram, win7 64bit, 8600 GTS plays rainbow six lockdown 16aa 16af max setting gets 39 frame rate.

and some people say ohh 4650 is not so far off from 4670..... ha ha yeah right. 4670 is a huge gap faster than 4650. 4670 is a low budget gaming card, it can play call of duty 4 max setting well and 4650 is not even a gaming card. its just a junk card.

and you can call 4670 is the next gen X850 XT since it is very near each other in speed.

4650 and 2600 XT is equal.

two 8600 GTS sli is equal to a speed of a 9800 GT. 8600 GTS is a good card. one 8600 GTS installed with FX-74, 8gb ram and you can play all new games fine like left 4 dead 2, farcry 2, stalker call of pripyat ect... all nicely at max setting.

Forget the 8600 GTS and the HD 4650 they are both slow. Pay a little extra and go with the HD 4670 you wont be disappointed.

If its the 1GB DDR3 version of 4650, it will be a lot faster than the 8600gts.

If its just the ddr2 version, it wont be much of an upgrade
