hi there im wanting to get a new gpu and was wondering how a 4830 would stand up against a 9800gtx+?? my plan is to run 1 4830 and then in a few months add another 1 tin crossfire. iv heard that the 4830 is just a 4850 with some shader units removed and underclocked true?

cheers

A 4830 does not quite have the performance of a 9800gtx+. A 4850 is really the ATI equivalent. Although 2x4830 will blow a 9800gtx+ away. I would spend the extra (what, 30 bucks?) and just start off with a 4850. This card is one of the cheapest 4850s and is one of the highest rated cards on newegg, and would be more than a match for a 9800gtx+:

Although an overclocked 4830 (core at like 700mhz will have around the performance of a 4850.

he's right.

4830 is no match against a 4850/9800gtx+ unless you overclock it. but then again you can also oc the gtx+.

and two 4830's will kill a single 4870.

or if i were you, i'll wait this april for the release of the 4770. it's VERY CLOSE to a 4850 and at 40nm, you should be able to oc it more and get more performance than an oced 4850. plus the fact that it's just $100, it will be the new bang for buck card replacing the 4830

I am in the same boat. I need to replace my 8800GTS. I am torn between a 4870 512mb now, 2x4830's now, a 4850 now and another later. I am leaning heavily towards the 4830's as together, they are a great price/performance buy and I really don't think I'll need anything more than that for a while.

If I were you, I would wait a week or so and see if there are any deals. If you can get 2x4830's for under $150 shipped, thats a good deal.
