ok, just got a second hand gainward 4850, now i was checking the clocks etc. og GPU-Z when i seen that the subvendor is Asus, and not gainward

the clocks and everything seem to be ok, the card itself says 4850 on the fan. and looks like this

also on GPU-Z it says 4800 series and not 4850.

anyone else with this card??

what could be the reason for this, the card itself seems to be no different in performance from the 8800GT i just changed it with

The previous owner probably flashed the bios from Gainward to Asus because Asus probably had higher clock speeds or can overclock the clock speeds further. 4800 series, that's normal it will state that with every 48xx card e.g. 4870, 4850 etc.
It's supposed to say 4800 series, it's the same driver for the 4830, 4850, 4850X2, 4870 and 4870X2.

Don't get all paranoid.

GPU-Z could've also misread the info or the card was later flashed with an ASUS bios. You said it is second hand.

Run 3dmark06 and see if you get a performance difference over the 8800GT. It's definitely a faster card.

this image shows the card has different readings

Where? They match perfectly.

I think he means the first pic lol >< and i am fairly sure your card is just throttling, when you put it under load it will go back to highest clock speeds.

it says GPU clock 500HMz and memory, 750MHZ. They should be 625 and 993MHz

*sigh*

No.... they shouldn't be.

It's in 2D mode because you're not in a game. All video cards downclock when they're not in 3D mode.

yep, underload it goes to its orignial clock speeds.

is there a way to have the clock on the GPU constant on 625 and 993?

I don't think so, but why would you want too? it's saving power when your graphics card isn't being used and the second it is being used there back to normal.

Not in Vista 64bit no, ATI tool had a feature to disable that but it doesn't work now.

But why would you want too?

By having it throttle it saves power and heat you don't need.

when i play GTA4 and crysis, im getting fewer frames than i did with my 8800GT.

i get 25FPS on crysis, everything V.H, got 27FPS with the 8800GT, GTA4 was 30FPS but with the 4850 its 22FPS.

Sounds like we're getting into drivers here. How did you go about uninstalling the Nvidia driver and installing the Ati ones? They don't play nice together at all, and many people have to do a full reformat for unknown reasons, but then get exceptional performance after that.

Did you at least use driver cleaner pro?, then go into safe mode and use it again on the NV drivers, then install the ati ones?

i had a 8800GT, i went to control panel got rid of all the nvidia programs and drivers. Then delted the Nvidia folders. Then i ran driver cleaner for 20 minutes in windows. i stopped it and did 20 minutes in safe mode and it was taking a long time. stopped it and installed the 4850 with the latest ati drivers

Try overclocking the card until you get artifacts in ATITool. An overclocked 4850 is a wonderful thing.
With that reference cooling I doubt his overclocks are going to be something to write home about. At least mine never were on my visiontek. I still put money on drivers since it's been such a prevalent problem for others in the past. But you did do a very thorough job at removing the old ones, I'll give you a pat on the back for that.
