So how would this upgrade be if it was for my sig rig?

I could possibly sell my 4850 for $120 and get the 4870 1 GB for $170 or even the GTX260 for $160

While its not a HUGE improvement, it would definitely be noticeable. With my 4870 I can play Crysis @ max w/ 16xAA, low of 25FPS high of over 40.

How about your cpu?

Opteron?
I actually think my opty is still bottlenecking the card. I know it bottlenecked my 2 768 9600 GSOs'.

And my cpu is an AMD socket 939 Opteron 180, stock is 2.4ghz x 2. Its got a very mild 500MHz OC on it @ stock voltage. I can take it above 3 but I don't have good enough cooling to keep it there.
That said, even with my somewhat outdated CPU and the 4870 I scored 11125 in 3dm06. MY CPU actually scored better than some AM2 builds

Going to the 4870 would not be a big improvement. IMO, if you are going to make an upgrade, why not make it a good one. You would be happier aiming higher, holding off a bit, waiting for the April ati line-up of new cards to come out and then make your move. The 4850x2 1gb (although I usually only recommend the 2gb version) should be down to $215-225. That's only $25 higher than a single 4870. Then again, all the 48XX will be dropping so the 4870 1gb will be down as well. But like I said, if you are going to make a card upgrade, which doesn't happen everyday, why not make it a big one if you can. Good luck with your new ati card purchase.
it'd be better if you wait for the 4890 to come out. it's almost april anyway

LOL @ 16xAA, with an Opty no less. Sure you are... Maybe at 800x600 res, and even then I doubt it.

Wow, just wow.... He has no reason to lie, and Opty's aren't **** chips anyhow, even if they are older tech.

lets try 1680x1050. And with ONE 9600 GSO @ 1680x1050 with everything on high 0xAA this system got 25.21fps average.

Errr.......
No but it did beat out an AM2 dual core in 3dm06.Clock for clock 939's can almost match Am2 CPUs'.
Maybe it just takes more skill to OC an Opty and get good results than OCing an i7

Aside from that my 4870 is factory OC'd. And my GSO can oc like crazy, click on the link in my sig and thats what I was able to attain with them in SLI. Individually they do better.

it's not worth the outlay IMO

save up and then get a GTX285 or better
Save up for a gtx285, then buy a 4850x2. Take the extra $75 you will have, buy 2 more Gb of G. Skill DDR2 1000 for your system and the rest into saving for a new cpu.

wait for the 4890. Or just save more money for a more worthwhile upgrade i.e gtx295/4870x2
