4870 cooling

I'm looking at the 4870 as it is about 90 quid from ebuyer, i know that it runs hot and i was wondering if anyone' has used a 4870 in the sunbeam cases with the core fan? Did it help keep it cool or did the core fan just blow warm air onto an already hot gpu? also would removing the pci slot covers above and below the gpu help with the hot air being blown out of the case?

the 4870 i'm, looking at is the one that doesn't blow the air out the back of the case its and xfx one

1) That video card you linked is the stock cooler and DOES exhaust the heat out of the case.
2) The stock cooler on the 4870s aren't bad actually - the overheating that people were whining about when it first came out was caused by poor fan profiles in CCC. It's long been fixed and you now have the option to set the fan speed. I personally like 35% as it's a good compromise between noise and performance - at that speed, the card tops out at 75C during stress testing. Gaming never gets it as hot as stress testing BTW
3) Those fans in your case will provide cool, non-stagnant air for the GPU's fans and will help drop temperatures (I actually set up something similar in my case).
4) Taking the PCI covers off your case is advisable

Hope that answers all your questions

What Killa said. With me, I have 2 fans blowing air into, toward my GPU and a fan on the bottom push air toward my GPU <.<

That card doesn't exhaust heat out of the back, the picture in the link is wrong, someone who bought that card and reviewed provided a link to the right cooler.

Thanks for the answers, and + rep

Oo - that's a neat cooler. Yeah, the case fan setup will not only provide cool air for your video card but will also help exhaust the hot air out the case

If you have no other PCI or PCIE cards, you could also try placing an 80mm fan under your video card against the PCI slots to further help exhaust the video card's heat. It's not at all necessary though, just a thought:

Will a side fan work as well as the core fan? If so i may go for the antec 300 instead.

you would probably fair better witha case that has better cooling. I have the 300 as my sig rig and it keeps everything cool, but its loud as I have my fans pushing hard. Try to experiment a little with your airflow and watch your temps and eventually you will come up with a viable solution.

Also reseating the heatsink with some AS5 should drop a few c.

+1 to reseating the sink/ repasting.
I recently did so with the stock sinks on my 4890s and got a 8*C drop in temps.

I probably won't go that far when i get the cards, unless heat is huge problem. I'll probably turn up the fans and the fan cooler speed if i need to.

btw what speeds do the cards clock down to?

Im pretty sure they clock down to the 200-300mhz range at idle.
is it worth going for the 1gb version over the 52mb one? planned monitor is a 22", resolution 1650 by 1080.

Thanks

I would say so. The extra memory comes in handy with AA and AF.

If purchasing a new 4870 I'd suggest one of the Sapphire Vapor-X cards. They have excellent cooling, mine Idles at 25c and never above 75c under full load such as furmark and OCCT.
I'll look into it, not sure of they still offer the Vapour-X cards. they don't have as many 48** cards in due to the 5*** series card being released. Is it worth getting a 5770 over the 4870? the price difference is about a tenner

I don't need the performance of the 4870, it just has to run X3 Reunion and be future-proof to a certain degree
