The ATi Radeon HD 4870 is exactly the same video card as the [more expensive] ATi FirePro V8700 except for the BIOS and a greater memory frequency. Now, I would think that you should be able to flash the 4870 to the V8700 using a BIOS modified for 512MB and be able to use the Fire series drivers?

probably won't work. Pretty sure there is a hardware block on using a Radeon as a FirePro.

He should be able to blind flash or flash from another card (dual PCIE or from a PCI GFX card) The only reason it may not work is if there is something in the new BIOS that would physically damage the card. (too much RAM voltage or core voltage for example)
