4870 vs 4870 oc.. which??

Hi Guys.. Just ordered a Sapphire HD4870 1G GDDR5 PCI E TVO video card and 5 minutes after placing the order, the website I purchased from listed a
Hightech ATI HD4870 IceQ4 Turbo (Overclocked) PCI-E 2.0 1GB for an extra $40 (australia).

Is it really worth the extra $40 to go for the o/c card? I am a complete Noob so dont know how to overclock yet, and the games I play are simply BF2, Flight sim X and COD4. So tell me... should i pay the extra $40..

System specs:

Phenom II 940
Gigabyte GA- ma790x-ud4
G.Skill 2 x 2gb
Vista Premium 64bit
Corsair tx750w

Thanks

why pay extra when you can overclock it yourself for free.
you wont really need to overclock it to play those games but if you want to its really easy if you use atitool or riva tuner or even through the CCC console.
Overclocking a videocard is really easy. Basically all you do is a move a slider in the Catalyst Control Center and then test the new clocks in a few games...

On the other hand. Is it the Sapphire card with the stock cooler? If so, then the HIS card has a better cooler.

It is the same as pictured here... whatever that is... http://benchmarkreviews.com/images/r...870-Corner.jpg

rangibro,

I would stick with what you have. It really isn't worth the extra money. I have the sapphire card too, 4870 1gb, and I have tested it in games/benchmarked stock with the stock cooler - and now it is watercooled and overclocked. I would definitely not worry about it, if you want to overclock it yourself it is extremely easy in the ATI CCC(Catalyst Control Center) that comes with your driver software. The stock fan/heatsink setup on the Sapphire cards isn't too bad, the fan can get noisy though when it speeds up to compensate for the additional heat.

Either way, for the negligible performance increase you may see - I'd say keep the cheaper card you ordered and buy a new game or save the money for something else.

I'm guessing your buying from Umart (I recognised the weird PCI E TVO in the name which Umart has). If it is Umart your buying from then your lucky because your not going to be getting the one in the picture like I thought I was going to. Instead you will probably be getting this one http://us.st12.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.c...2044_787860764. Good news as the card stays very cool, bad news if you planned a red colour theme
.

Edit: Link fails dunno why, pretty much its the black cooler and blue PCB Sapphire 4870 which looks alot like there toxic edition.

The OC from those cards is not really big, it'll hardly ever make a difference. If anything, the iceq cooler seems a better reason to get the card (if the one you got was the reference model that is). The price difference is usually more than its worth
Definitely not worth the extra $40. Generally the only time that an oc edtion card is worth it is for the better cooler or higher binned chips.

And thanks all... you just saved me 40 bucks.
Since you are new to this let me share my experience with you. I don't have That card (sig) and I am mobile. But that said. I face greater issues than you will.

On my core I can up 200Mhz my VRAM 100Mhz (effective DDR 200Mhz).

So I think you can likely OC better than the pre-OC cards. I use AMD GPU Clock Tool, yea from AMD themselves?

Go for the cheapest, a 4870 is a 4870 (tho the coolers may differ)
